54 Ye are blessed of the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

55 The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord's: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

LESSON XCIX.

I WAITED patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust: and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee.

6 The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him.

7 But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

¶ 8 Lord, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.

9 I cried to thee, O Lord; and unto the Lord I made my supplication.

10 Let all those that seek

thee rejoice and be glad in thee; let such as love thy salvation, say continually, The Lord be magnified.

11 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my de liverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

12 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

13 For the Lord God will help me, therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

14 He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come

near to me.

15 Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? Lo, they all shall wax old as a garment: the moth shall eat them up.

16 Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.

17 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

18 Trust ye in the Lord for ever for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.

19 For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the

lofty city he layeth it low: he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.

20 The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.

21 Yea, in the way of thy judgements, O Lord, have we waited for thee: the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.

22 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early for when thy judgements are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

23 Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the Lord.

24 Lord, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people.

25 Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.

26 Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield.

27 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

28 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

29 Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth we have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.

30 Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and for ever: for the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

31 The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.

32 Judah sought him with their whole desire, and he was found of them; and the Lord gave them rest round about them.

33 Happy art thou, O Israel; who is like unto thee, O people? saved by the Lord, the shield of thine help, and the sword of thine excellency!

LESSON C.

I WILL love thee, O Lord my strength.

2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

5 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.

¶6 Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

7 Hear the right, O Lord, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer that goeth not out of feigned lips.

8 Let my sentence come

forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.

9 Thou hast proved mine heart, thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

10 By the word of thy lips, I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

11 Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.

12 I have called upon thee; for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.

13 Shew thy marvellous loving-kindness, Ŏ thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee, from those that rise up against them.

14 Keep me as the apple of thine eye hide me under the shadow of thy wings.

15 Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.

16 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.

17 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

18 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up.

19 Thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

[blocks in formation]

26 Although the fig-tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vine; though the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls;

27 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

28 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

29 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

30 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war, from the power of the sword.

31 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

32 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt

thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

33 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

34 Behold, he that keepeth Israel, shall neither slumber nor sleep.

35 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.

36 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

37 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

38 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in: from this time forth, and even for evermore.

39 The Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

40 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

41 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that trust in the Lord. 42 The Lord bless you, and keep you!

43 The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you!

44 The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace!

LESSON CI.

In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust let me never be put to confusion.

2 Deliver me in thy righte ousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.

3 Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my for→ tress.

4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

5 For thou art my hope, O Lord God; thou art my trust from my youth.

6 In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust, let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righte

ousness.

7 Bow down thine ear to me, deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

8 For thou art my rock and my fortress: therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide

me.

9 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercy's sake.

¶ 10 Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.

11 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee, for thou wilt answer me.

12 Thou which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

13 Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.

14 I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel!

15 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.

16 My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long.

17 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

18 I cried unto thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my refuge, and my portion in the land of the living.

19 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me thy right hand shall

save me.

20 The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever forsake not the works of thine own hands.

21 Blessed be the Lord, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.

22 The Lord is my strength, and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth, and with my song will I praise him.

23 The Lord is my strength, and is become my salvation.

24 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly.

25 The right hand of the

Lord is exalted: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly.

26 The Lord hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.

27 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.

28 I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.

29 Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.

30 Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.

31 O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste for my help.

32 I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.

33 My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day for I know not the numbers thereof.

34 I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.

35 O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.

36 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not: until I have shewed thy strength unto this genera→ tion, and thy power to every one that is to come,

LESSON CII.

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirst
