(From "The Spirit of the Psalms.")

CHRIST is gone up with a joyful sound,
He is gone to his bright abode,

The armies of heav'n they throng around,
To hail their ascended God.

2 He is gone to his glorious throne on high, And to claim the victor's crown; And captive he leads captivity,

And the foe he has overthrown.

3 He is gone to pour, from the fount of love, Rich gifts on a sinful race;

To prepare for the saints a place above, And to shed the Spirit's grace.

4 O bless the Lord for such mercy shewn! O bless, with our latest breath,

The mighty God, in whose hands alone
Are the issues of life and death!
5 Christ is gone up with a joyful sound,
He is gone to his bright abode;

1

With Seraphim pure who his throne surO praise our ascended God!

Whit-Sunday.

HYMN XXX. L. M.

[round,

SPIRIT of Mercy, Truth, and Love!
Shed thy blest influence from above;
And still from age to age convey
The wonders of this sacred Day!

2 In every clime, by ev'ry tongue,
Be God's amazing glory sung:
Let all the list'ning earth be taught
The acts our Great Redeemer wrought.

3 Unfailing Comfort! Heav'nly Guide!
Still o'er thy favour'd Church preside!
Still may mankind thy blessing prove,
Spirit of Mercy, Truth, and Love!

HYMN XXXI. 6 EIGHTS.

REATOR, Spirit! by whose aid The world's foundations first were laid, Come, visit every waiting mind! Come, pour thy grace on all mankind! From sin and sorrow set us free,

And make us temples worthy Thee!

2 O Holy Ghost, descend from high,
Rich in thy seven-fold energy!

Thrice Holy Fount! Thrice Holy Fire!
Our hearts with heav'nly love inspire!
Come, and thy sacred unction bring,
To sanctify us while we sing!

3 Eternal honour, endless fame,
Attend th' Almighty Father's Name:
Let God the Son be glorified,

1

Who for lost man's redemption died!
And equal adoration be,

O blessed Comforter, to Thee!

ET songs of praises fill the sky!
Christ, our ascended Lord,

Sends down his Spirit from on high,
Fulfilling all his Word:

All hail the day of Pentecost,
The coming of the Holy Ghost!

2 The Spirit, by His heav'nly breath,
New life creates within:
He quickens sinners from the death
Of trespasses and sin :

All hail the day of Pentecost,
The coming of the Holy Ghost!

3 Come, Holy Spirit! from above,
With thy celestial fire;

Come, and with flames of zeal and love
Our hearts and tongues inspire!

Be this our day of Pentecost,
The coming of the Holy Ghost!

HOLY GHOST! on this Thy day
To Thee for help we cry,

To guide us through the dreary way
Of dark mortality!

2 We ask not, Lord, the cloven flame,
Or tongues of various tone;
But long Thy praises to proclaim
With fervour in our own.

3 We mourn not that prophetic skill
Is found on earth no more,
Enough for us to trace Thy will
In Scripture's sacred lore.

4 No heav'nly harpings soothe our ear,
No mystic dreams we share;

Yet hope to feel Thy comfort near,
And bless Thee in our prayer.

OUR

UR blest Redeemer, ere He breath'd
His tender last farewell,

A Guide, a Comforter, bequeath'd,
With us to dwell.

2 He came, in semblance of a dove,
With shelt'ring wings outspread ;
The holy balm of peace and love
On earth to shed.

3 He came, sweet influence to impart,
A gracious, willing guest,

And whisp'ring peace, each humble heart
He soothes to rest.

4 And His that gentle voice we hear,
Soft as the breath of even,

That checks each thought, that calms each
And speaks of heav'n.

5 And ev'ry virtue we possess,
And ev'ry vict'ry won,
And ev'ry thought of holiness,
Are His alone.

6 Spirit of purity and grace,
Our weakness, pitying, see!

[fear,

O make our hearts Thy dwelling-place,
And worthier Thee!

HOLY, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty ! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Holy, holy, holy! merciful, and mighty, [Thee; God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity! 2 Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea:

Cherubim and Seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be! 3 Holy, holy, holy! tho' the darkness hide Thee, Tho' the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy Name, in earth and
sky and sea,

Holy, holy, holy! merciful, and mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

HYMN XXXVI. L. M.

1 ALMIGHTY Father! who didst give
Thy Son to die, that man might live,
To Thee, great God! the song we raise;
Thee, for thy pard'ning love, we praise.
2 Almighty Son! Incarnate Word!
Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord!
To Thee, great God! the song we raise ;
Thee, for thy saving mercy, praise.
