Thy glory o'er creation shines;
But in thy sacred word
I read in fairer, brighter lines,
My bleeding, dying Lord.

'Tis here, whene'er my comforts droop,
And sins and sorrows rise,

Thy love with cheerful beams of hope
My fainting heart supplies.

But ah! too soon the pleasing scene
Is clouded o'er with pain;
My gloomy fears rise dark between,
And I again complain.

Jesus, my Lord, my life, my light,
O come with blissful ray;

Break radiant through the shades of night,

And chase my fears away.

Then shall my soul with rapture trace

The wonders of thy love;

But the full glories of thy face

Are only known above.

[blocks in formation]

REJOICE evermore with angels above,

In Jesus's power, in Jesus's love:

With glad exultation your triumph proclaim, Ascribing salvation to God and the Lamb.

Thou, Lord, our relief in trouble hast been;
Hast sav'd us from grief, hast sav'd us from sin;
The pow'r of thy Spirit can set our hearts free;
And we shall inherit all fulness in thee.

All fulness of peace, all fulness of joy,
And spiritual bliss that never can cloy;
To us it is given in Jesus to know,
A kingdom of heaven, a heaven below.

No longer we join where sinners invite,
Nor envy the swine their brutish delight ;
Their joy is all sadness, their mirth is all vain,
Their laughter is madness, their pleasure is pain.
O may they at last with sorrow return,
The pleasure to taste for which they were born!
Our Jesus receiving, our happiness prove,
The joy of believing, the heaven of love.

Glory and Grace in Christ. L. M.

OW to the Lord, a noble song!

Now

Awake, my soul; awake, my tongue;

Hosanna to th' eternal Name,

And all his boundless love proclaim.

See where it shines in Jesu's face,
The brightest image of his grace;
God in the person of his Son,

Has all his mightiest works outdone.

The spacious earth, and spreading flood, Proclaim the wise and pow'rful God; And thy rich glories from afar,

Sparkle in ev'ry rolling star.

But in his looks a glory stands,
The noblest labour of thine hands ;
The pleasing lustre of his eyes
Outshines the wonders of the skies.

Grace! 'tis a sweet, a charming theme;
My thoughts rejoice at Jesu's name !
Ye angels, dwell upon the sound;
Ye heav'ns, reflect it to the ground!
O, may I live to reach the place,
Where he unveils his lovely face!
Where all his beauties you behold,
And sing his name on harps of gold!

Phil. iii. 7-9. L. M.

O more, my God, I boast no more

N%

Of all the duties I have done;

I quit the hopes I held before,
To trust the merits of thy Son.

Now for the love I bear his name,
What was my gain I count my loss:
My former pride I call my shame,
And nail my glory to his cross.

Yes, Lord, I must and will esteem
All things but loss for Jesu's sake;
O may my soul be found in him,
And of his righteousness partake!
The best obedience of my hands
Dares not appear before thy throne;
But faith can answer thy demands,
By pleading what my Lord has done.

Redeeming Love. C. M.

OME, heavenly love, inspire my song
With thy immortal flame;

And teach my heart, and teach my tongue,
The Saviour's lovely name.

The Saviour! O what endless charms

Dwell in the blissful sound!

Its influence ev'ry fear disarms,

And spreads sweet comfort round.

Here pardon, life, and joys divine,
In rich effusion flow,

For guilty rebels lost in sin,

And doom'd to endless woe.

God's only Son, (stupendous grace

Forsook his throne above;

And swift to save our wretched race,
He flew on wings of love.

Th' almighty Former of the skies
Stoop'd to our vile abode ;

!

While angels view'd with wond'ring eyes,
And hail'd th' incarnate God.

O the rich depths of love divine!
Of bliss a boundless store:
Dear Saviour, let me call thee mine,
I cannot wish for more.

On thee alone my hope relies,

Beneath thy cross I fall;

My Lord, my life, my sacrifice,
My Saviour, and my all.

ET worldly minds the world pursue,
It has no charms for me;

Once I admir'd its trifles too,
But grace has set me free.
