Join'd in one Spirit to our Head,
Where he appoints we go,
And still in Jesu's footsteps tread,
And do his work below.

O let us ever walk in him,
And nothing know beside;
Nothing desire, nothing esteem,
But Jesus crucify'd.

Closer and closer let us cleave
To his belov'd embrace,
Expect his fulness to receive,
And grace to answer grace.

Thus let us hasten to the day
Which shall our flesh restore,

When death shall all be done

And bodies part no more.

away,

For Ministers at Meeting. 8.7.

WELCOME, welcome, blessed servant

Messenger of Jesu's grace!

O how beautiful the feet of

Him that brings good news of peace!
All hail, herald, &c.

Priest of God; thy people's joy.

279

Saviour, bless his message to us,
Give us hearts to hear the sound
Of redemption, dearly purchas'd
By thy death and precious wound..
O reveal it, &c.

To our poor and helpless souls.

Give reward of grace and glory,
To thy faithful labourer dear,
Let the incense of our hearts be
Offer'd up in faith and prayer.
Bless, O bless him, &c.

Now, henceforth, for evermore.

For Ministers at Parting L. M.

ITH all thy pow'r, O Lord, defend.

WITH

With all Pe now

Him whom we now to Thee commend;

Our faithful minister secure,

And make him to the end endure.

Gird him with all- sufficient grace;
Give to his footsteps paths of peace;
Thy truth and faithfulness fulfil;
Preserve him, Lord, from ev'ry ill.

Before his face protection send;
O love him, save him to the end:

Nor let him as thy pilgrim rove,
With out the convoy of thy love.
Enlarge, enflame, and fill his heart;
In him thy mighty power exert ;
That thousands yet unborn may praise
The wonders of redeeming grace.

Christ our Shepherd. Psal. xxiii. C. M. Y shepherd will supply my need, Jehovah is his name;

MY

In pastures fresh he makes me feed,
Beside the living stream.

He brings my wand'ring spirit back,
When I forsake his ways;
And leads me, for his mercy's sake,
In paths of truth and grace.

When I walk thro' the shades of death,
Thy presence is my stay;
A word of thy supporting breath
Drives all my fears away.

Thy hand, in sight of all my foes,
Doth still my table spread;
My cup with blessings overflows,
Thine oil anoints my head.

The sure provisions of my God
Attend me all my days;

O may thy house be mine abode,
And all my work be praise.

There would I find a settled rest,
(While others go and come)
No more a stranger or a guest,
But like a child at home.

Christ ascending and reigning. C. M.

[ocr errors]

FOR a shout of sacred joy

To God the sovʼreign King!
Let ev'ry land their tongues employ,
And hymns of triumph sing.

Jesus, our God, ascends on high!
His heav'nly guards around,
Attend him rising thro' the sky
With trumpet's joyful sound.

While angels shout and praise their King,
Let mortals learn their strains;

Let all the earth his honours sing;
O'er all the earth he reigns.

Rehearse his praise with awe profound;
Let knowledge lead the song;
Nor mock him with a solemn sound,
Upon a thoughtless tongue.

In Isr'el stood his ancient throne,
He lov'd that chosen race;
But now he calls the world his own,
And heathens taste his grace.

The British Islands are the Lord's,

There Abraham's God is known;

While pow'rs and princes, shields and swords, Submit before his throne.

The Church the Honour of a Nation. S. M..

GREAT is the Lord our God,

And let his praise be great;

He makes his churches his abode,
His most delightful seat.

These temples of his grace,
How beautiful they stand!
The honours of our native place,
And bulwarks of our land. ]

In Sion God is known,
A refuge in distress ;
