When the women in their song had ascribed to Saul his thousands, and to David his ten thousands, Saul was very wroth, and said, &c. What can he have more but the kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that day and forward, &c. became his enemy continually, and would have killed him. -1 Sam. xviii. 6—11; xix. 1.

Ahab so sorely discontented and displeased with Naboth, that he would not eat bread, &c. and that because he could not have the vineyard.-1 Kings xxi. 1-4.

Haman went forth joyful, and with a glad heart; but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was full of indignation against Mordecai, &c. And having told his friends of his glory, &c. yet (said he) all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting in the king's gate.-Esth. v. 9-13.

Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity: for they shall soon be cut down, &c. fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass, &c. Fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.—Ps. xxxvii. 1, 2. 7—9.

As for me, my feet were almost gone, &c. for I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.-Ps. lxxiii. 2—4.

They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the Lord.-Ps. cvi. 16.

Strive not with a man without cause, if he hath done thee no harm: envy thou not the oppressor, (or man of violence,) and choose none of his ways.-Prov. iii. 30, 31.

Hatred stirreth up strifes.-Prov.

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox, and hatred therewith.-Prov. xv. 17.

Let not thine heart envy sinners,

but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long.-Prov. xxiii. 17.

Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked. -Prov. xxiv. 1. 19.

Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy, (or jealousy)?—Prov. xxvii. 4.

The forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.-Prov. xxx. 33.

I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour.-Eccles. iv. 4.

Lord, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see and be ashamed for their envy at (or toward) thy people: yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.— Isa. xxvi. 11.

Therefore as I live, saith the Lord God, I will even do according to thine anger, and according to thine envy, which thou hast used out of thy hatred against them, (or to them).Ezek. xxxv. 11.

Pilate said to the Jews, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? for he knew that for envy they had delivered him.-Matt. xxvii. 17, 18.

John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife, therefore Herodias had a quarrel (or an inward grudge) against him, and would have killed him.Mark vi. 18, 19. 24.

The patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt.-Acts vii. 9.

Let him shew out of a good conversation his works, with meekness of wisdom: but if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, &c. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, (or unnatural,) devilish: for where envy and strife is, there is confusion, (or tumults, or unquietness,) and every evil work.James iii. 5, 6. 8. 13-16.

Grudge not (or grieve not) one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned.-James v. 9.

Wherefore, laying aside all malice, &c. and envyings, and all evil speakings, &c.-1 Pet. ii. 1.

If any man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?-1 John iv. 20.

CHAPTER LIX.

OF MURDER AND TAKING AWAY THE LIFE OF MAN.

Doting about questions and strifes BECAUSE God accepted of Abel's of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, offering, and had not respect unto railings, evil surmisings, &c. Godli-Cain, and his offering, Cain rose up

against his brother Abel, and slew him And the Lord said, &c. What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand, &c.-And Lamech said unto his wives, &c. I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.-Gen. iv. 46. 8. 10, 11. 23, 24.

Your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.-Gen. ix. 5, 6. Because Jacob had gotten his father's blessing, Esau hated him. And Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand, then will I slay my brother Jacob.Gen. xxvii. 41.

Joseph's brethren hated him, and conspired against him to slay him. Gen. xxxvii. 4. 11. 18.

Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. Omy soul, come not thou into their secret, &c. for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will, &c. Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel. -Gen. xlix. 5—7; xxxiv. 25, &c. Thou shalt not kill.-Exod. xx. 13. He that smiteth a man, so that he die, he shall be surely put to death, &c. If a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour to slay him with guile, thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.-Exod. xxi. 12-14; Levit. xxiv. 17.

If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him, &c.-Exod. xxii. 2, 3.

If he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, &c. or with

throwing a stone, &c. or with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death, &c. If he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die; or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die; he that smote him shall surely be put to death, for he is a murderer, &c. But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait, or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm; then the congregation shall judge, and deliver the slayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, &c. The murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. Moreover, ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, but he shall be surely put to death, &c. So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are ; for blood, it defileth the land, and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, (or there can be no expiation for the land,) but by the blood of him that shed it.-Numb. xxxv. 16, &c.; Deut. xix. 4—6. 10— 13; Exod. xxi. 12-15.

When David had met with Saul (who was pursuing his life) upon an advantage in the cave, and might have slain him, and was moved thereto; yet he refused, and said, The Lord avenge me; but mine hand shall not be upon thee. -1 Sam. xxiv. 12, 13; xxvi. 9—11.

David's murder of Uriah, and judg ments from God on David's house for it.-2 Sam. xi; xii.

The murdering of Naboth threatened and punished upon Ahab's house. -1 Kings xxi; xxii. 38.

Surely at the commandment of the Lord came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseb, &c. and for the innocent blood that he shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood,

which the Lord would not pardon.-| 2 Kings xxiv. 3, 4.

The murderer, rising with the light, killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.-Job xxiv. 14; Ps. x. 4. 8.

Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation.Ps. li. 14; 2 Sam. xi.

They sleep not except they have done some mischief: and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.-Prov. iv. 16, 17.

God hates him whose hands shed innocent blood.-Prov. iv. 16, 17.

Will ye steal, murder, &c. and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name? -Jer. vii. 9, 10.

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood: therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish.-Hosea iv. 2, 3.

The mariners, when they were to cast out Jonah into the sea, prayed to God, That they might not perish for his life, and that God would not lay innocent blood to their charge. Jonah i. 14.

The chief priests and elders implicitly acknowledged their guilt of murdering Christ for that, when Judas had agreed with them for thirty pieces of silver to betray him, and being struck with remorse for his execrable villany, and bringing back the money, said, I have betrayed innocent blood; when they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. Then they afterward said, It is not lawful to put those pieces of silver into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.-Matt. xxvii. 3-6.

Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, &c.-Matt. xv. 19. Ye are of your father the devil, &c. he was a murderer from the beginning.-John viii. 44.

The barbarians thought that vengeance would not suffer a murderer to live. Acts xxviii. 3, 4.

The works of the flesh are, envyings, murders, &c. of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.-Gal. v. 19. 21.

Love one another: not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother and wherefore slew he him? because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous, &c. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.-1 John iii. 11, 12. 15.

Such who were dreadfully plagued, yet repented not of their murders, &c.-Rev. ix. 21.

All murderers, &c. shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.-Rev. xxi. 8.

Without are dogs, &c. murderers, &c.-Rev. xxii. 15.

CHAPTER LX.

OF ADULTERIES.

ABRAHAM and Jacob, by the consent of their wives, went in unto their maidens, and had children by them.Gen. xvi. 1, &c.; xxx. 1, &c.

Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent and took Sarah, Abraham's wife; but God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man for the woman which thou hast taken, for she is a man's wife: but Abimelech had not come near her, &c. He said, In the innocency of my hands have I done this: and God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know, &c. therefore suffered I thee not to touch her; now therefore, restore the man his wife, &c. if not, know that thou shalt surely die.-Gen. xx. 2—7.

Abimelech saw Isaac sporting with Rebekah his wife, and Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? &c. What is this thou hast done unto us? One

of the people might lightly have lien | neighbour's wife, whosoever toucheth with thy wife, and thou shouldest | her shall not be innocent, &c. Whoso have brought guiltiness upon us. And committeth adultery with a woman, Abimelech charged all his people, lacketh understanding; he that doeth saying, He that toucheth this man or it, destroyeth his own soul; a wound his wife, shall surely be put to death. | and dishonour shall he get, and his reGen. xxvi. 811. proach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man, therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.-Prov. vi. 26-29. 32-35.

Reuben went and lay with Bilbah, his father's concubine. - Gen. xxxv. 22; xlix. 3, 4.

Such is the way of an adulterous woman, she eateth and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.-Prov. xxx. 20.

When Potiphar's wife tempted Jo- See the flattering and enticing seph to have lain with her, he answer- words and language of an adulterous ed her, My master, &c. hath not kept | woman, whereby she deceiveth a foolback any thing from me but thee, be- ish man.-Prov. vii. 7-21. cause thou art his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? and it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not to her to lie by her, or to be with her, &c. she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me; and he left his garment in her hand, and fled and gat him out. Gen.

xxxix. 7-13.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.Exod. xx. 14.

Will ye, &c. commit adultery, &c. and stand in this house before me? &c.-Jer. vii. 9, 10.

Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbour's wives, &c. I know, and am a witness, saith the Lord.-Jer. xxix. 23.

The man that committeth adultery How shall I pardon thee for this? with another man's wife; even he that &c. The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me; and disguiseth his face. -Job xxiv. 15.

If my heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door; let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her: for this is a heinous crime, &c. It is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all my increase.-Job xxxi. 9-12.

By means of a whorish woman, a man is brought to a piece of bread, and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life. Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burnt? &c. so he that goeth in to his

I have seen thy adulteries and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thy abominations on the hills, in the fields: woe unto thee, O Jerusalem, wilt thou not be made clean?-Jer. xiii. 27.

The Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because, &c. by swearing, &c. committing of adultery, they break out, &c. therefore shall the land mourn, &c.-Hosea iv. 1-3.

Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery, and whoso marrieth her which is put
