TEST FOR ENTRANCE TO BEGINNERS' GRADE,

SECTION B*

Test I

GETTING UP IN THE MORNING

I wake up at six o'clock in the morning.

I rise and dress.

I wash my hands and face.

I comb my hair.

I go into the dining-room.

I sit at the table.

I spread my napkin on my lap.

I put sugar and milk into my coffee.

I stir my coffee with my spoon.

I take a piece of bread and put it on my plate.
I take a piece of meat on my plate.

I eat my breakfast.

I leave the house.

I go to work.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR GIVING TEST I

Copy the above theme on the board.

Read the theme to the class.

Ask the individual students to read, one sentence per student.

All students who have no speaking knowledge of English should be placed in Section A of the Beginners' Grade.

Give the students any oral preparation necessary to their full comprehension of the subject-matter.

Do not allow the students to copy the theme in their note-books or elsewhere.

Erase the theme from the board.

Distribute the test paper.

Request the students to place their name and address in the upper left-hand corner.

Place on the board the questions given below.

Ask the students to write answers to the questions. Do not allow the students to converse or otherwise assist each other.

QUESTIONS

AIMS OF TEST I

The above test measures the students' ability to comprehend a theme dealing with the commonest experiences of daily life, to use correctly the nominative and possessive forms of the personal pronoun and the s-form of verbs.

Test II

THE MARKET

The woman takes the basket on her arm.

She walks to the market.

She enters the market.

She goes to the fruit-stand.

She buys six apples and six oranges.

She also buys onions, tomatoes, and potatoes.

She goes to the meat-stand.

She asks the butcher for a pound of round steak.
Next she goes to the "Creamery" stand.

She buys one pound of butter.

At the "Pastry" stand she buys two loaves of bread and a cake.

She leaves the market.

She goes home on the street-car.
