And she answered, I am Ruth thy handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art 3 a near kinsman. 10 And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou didst not follow young men, whether poor or rich. 11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest:| for all the 4 city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman. 12 And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: yet there is a kinsman nearer than I. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city. 16 And when she came to her motherin-law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her. 17 And she said, These six measures of barley he gave me; for he said to me, Go not empty to thy mother-in-law. 18 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou knowest how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he hath finished the thing this day." So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad. 19 And they rose in the morning early, and worshiped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her. 20 Wherefore it came to pass, 11 when the time had arrived, after Hannah had conceived, that she bore a son, and called his name 12 Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD. 21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. 22 But Hannah went not up; for she said to her husband, I will not go up until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever. 23 And Elkanah her husband said to her, Do what seemeth to thee good; tarry until thou hast weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 T And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young. 25 And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, O my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying to the LORD. 27 For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: 28 Therefore also I have 13 lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth 14 he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshiped. the LORD there. CHAP. II. 12 The 1 Hannah's song in thankfulness. And they went to their own home. 21 And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. IV. 1 The Israelites are overcome by the Philistines at Eben-ezer. 3 They fetch the ark to the terror of the Philistines. 10 They are smitten again, the ark taken, Hophni and Phinehas are slain. 12 Eli, at the news, falling backward, breaketh his neck. 19 The wife of Phinehas discouraged in her travail with I-chabod, dieth. ND the word of Samuel 1 2 came to AND of Samuell & came to against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines encamped in Aphek. 2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when 3 they joined batile, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of 4 the army in the field about four thousand men. 3 ¶ And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Why hath the LORD smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us s bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh to us, that when it cometh among us, it may save us from the hand of our enemies. 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark |
