“A psalm or hymn sung in soft chorus to the piano in the adjoining room he often asked for, and in reply to the question what he would like, he would say, 'Just give me a bairn's hymn.'

PREFACE.

The aim of the Editor in this compilation has been to include in one volume Hymns simple enough for the Infant School and mature enough for the most advanced Bible Classes, and sufficient in number and variety for all uses of School and Home worship.

Very earnest thanks are given to the authors and proprietors of hymns for permission, kindly and generously granted, to use the compositions which bear their names. And forgiveness is asked for any involuntary invasion of rights which could not be

ascertained.

The Divine Being. GOD, HIS NATURE AND WORSHIP.

1112.1210. 1“ Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.1 HOLY, Holy, Holy ! Lord God Almighty!

(to Thee; Gratefully adoring our songs shall rise Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and

Mighty! God in Three Persons,blessed Trinity ! 2 Holy, Holy, Holy! all the saints adore

Thee, Casting down their golden crowns

around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,

[shalt be. Who wert, and art, and evermore 3 Huly, Holy, Holy! though the darkness

hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy

glory may not see, Only Thou art holy: there is none

beside Thee Perfect in power, in love, and purity. 4 Holy, Holy, Holy ! Lord God Almighty, All Thy works shall praire Thy name,

in earth, and sky, and sea:
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and

Mighty !
God in Three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

1010.1111. 2 "All Thy works praise Thee, O Lord, and Thysaints shall bless Thee.—Ps.cxlv.10. i O WORSHIP the King

All glorious above;
O gratefully sing

His power and His love;
Our shield and defender,

The Ancient of days,
Pavilioned in splendour,

And girded with praise.
2 O tell of His might,

O sing of His grace,
Whose robe is the light,

Whose chariots of wrath

The deep thunder-clouds form, And dark is His path

On the wings of the storm. 3 The earth with its store

Of wonders untold,
Almighty! Thy power

Hath founded of old :
Hath stablished it fast

By a changeless decree,
And round it hath cast,

Like a mantle, the sea. 4 Thy bountiful care

What tongue can recite ?
It breathes in the air,

It shines in the light;
It streams from the hills,

It descends to the plain,
And sweetly distils

In the dew and the rain. 5 Frail children of dust,

And feeble as frail;
In Thee do we trust,

Nor find Thee to fail;
Thy mercies how tender,

How firm to the end !
Our Maker, Defender,

Redeemer, and Friend! 6 O measureless might!

Ineffable love!
While angels delight

To hymn Thee above,
The humbler creation,

Though feeble their lays,
With true adoration
Shall lisp to Thy praise.
