In order to avoid a mistake which is very frequently committed by those who use Walker's Dictionary, we have given an additional sound to the letter a, and have denominated it sharp à. It occurs in such words as fare, mare, care, &c.; and should be carefully distinguished from the sound of a in hate, late, mayor, &c. This distinction is always made by good speakers in England. By a critical examination of the Key-Sheet on page 5th, the instructer will ready understand the system adopted in this work; and it will be important to exercise the scholar by questioning him in the following manner. Q. What sound of a is heard in pay, pate, fate, and tame? A. Long a. Q. What is the sound of o in nor, fer, and borrow? A. The grave sound. Similar questions in relation to the sounds of all the vowels should be frequently repeated, till the scholar can designate the name and mark of the sound by hearing it. Accented syllables are marked thus (). Sometimes a double accent is given, thus ("); which denotes that the sound of the preceding consonant is to be repeated; as cop"y, al"oes, are pronounced as if written cop'py, aloes.

Those who are desirous of imitating Walker precisely, should be careful to pronounce e before r not like short u, but as in merit, ferry; and all persons should avoid sounding en and on as distinct syllables in such words as garden, pardon, &c. Pronounce these gar'dn, par'dn.

The present edition is considerably altered from the preceding; and it is believed that the alterations will be found to be improvements.
