Then a Concern came upon me to vifit Friends Meetings in the County of Effex, and I went from my Brother's to Hartford, and had feveral Meetings there; Ware. and one I had alfo at Ware, which was very large; after Hartford. which I went to Hartford again, I having divers Relations there; from thence I went to Bishopftafford, where ford. and there was Abundance of People at Cone, at an Evening-meeting we had there, where I met with our worthy Friend Joshua Toft, and his Fellow-traveller Jofeph Hobson, we rejoicing to fee each other. Cokfield. From Cone, I went to Cockfield, which was a very small Colchester. Meeting; from thence I went to Colchester, where I ftaid

feveral Days, and went to feveral Meetings, as at Rocklead and Manningtree, and then back again to Colchester, where, (on the Firft-day) I had a large Meeting in the Afternoon, and after Meeting, divers of the Friends came to fee me, and were for appointing Meetings for me to be at, in the enfuing Week, and defired to know my Mind therein; after a little Paufe I told them, I found a full Stop in my Mind from going to any more Meetings at prefent, and that I would wait fome Days with them in the City, till I faw further; while we were fitting together, a Letter came to me from London, that a Friend, Stephen Payton, had fet up my Name on the Exchange in London, as Mafter of the Barbadoes-Packet, which was the Veffel bought of me by John Agar, who fold her to faid Stephen Payton, who intended her for Philadelphia, and

next Morning a Meffenger was fent for me from London. 1735 Thus having fuch a favourable Opportunty of returning home, I embraced it, and went on Second-day to Witham, where I again' met with Joshua Toft and Jofeph Hobfon at a Meeting; from thence we went to Witham, Plaistow, where we had a Meeting, and then went to Bromley, near Bow, and was at Jofeph Olive's, had a Meeting with his People and Servants, which were Bromley. many; I thought it was a good Meeting, a divine Hand of Love was reached out to the young People, and they were advifed to give up their Hearts to their Creator in their Youthful Days; several Scores of People belong to his Family; after this Meeting I went to London, and prepared for the Voyage. When our London. Veffel was loaded, which was chiefly by Ifrael Pemberton the Younger, who went with us, as did our Owner Stephen Payton and Ifaac Brown, and four of my Kinsfolks, whofe Names are Freeman, with divers other Paffengers: In the latter End of the Twelfth Month, my Brother and his eldest Daughter Rebecca, with her Hufband Samuel Thornton, accompanied me to Gravesend, where our Parting with them was, as at Edmonton, very folemn and forrowful, we never expecting to fee one another more. From Gravesend we fail'd the 3d of the First Month to the Downs, and Downs. from thence down the British Channel to the Sea, and was at Sea above nine Weeks, which we thought long, having many contrary Winds; but, after we came on Shore, we understood, that there were divers Veffels that were much longer. At Sea we had divers Meetings, which were fome of them to my Satisfaction. I came very unwell on board; but, when at Sea, I mended; for which Favour I am truly thankful. After I had been at home fome Time, I went to Salem, and from thence to Cobanfy, and, in my Return was at Woodberry-Creek, and had Meetings at each Place: And, foon after, I vifited the Meetings of Friends at Bristol, Burlington, Trenton, and Borden's Burlington Town, and, in my Return home, at Middletown; by the Way, calling to fee my antient Friend Jofeph Kirkbride, and the Widow Warder; he was 92 Years of Age, and perfect in her Understanding; fhe faid, She did not know for what End the Almighty fhould prolong her Days to that Age; but fhe was fatisfied in his Will,

In the Fifth Month, I visited the Meetings of Friends at Haddonfield in Weft-Jerfey, and at Newton, Hartford, German-town, Abington, North-Wales, and Plymouth, and was divers Times at Philadelphia, and Frankfort.

After many Exercifes, and large Travels by Sea and Land, my Brethren, and divers others, not of our Society, expreffed their Gladnefs to fee me, rejoicing that I was like to spend my Time more on the Land, hoping that I would go no more to Sea; the which (God willing) I determined, having fo fettled my Affairs, that I could stay on Shore; and am truly and humbly thankful to the Almighty, that He, by his good Hand of Providence, in his due Time, had favour'd and helped me fo to do.

In the Sixth and Seventh Months, I again vifited the Meetings of Friends at Bristol, Burlington, Byberry, Britel, Abington, Horsham, German-town, Fair bill, and divers Times at Frankfort and Philadelphia.

In the Eighth Month, I went to Cobanfy and Salem, and was at two Meetings at Cobanfy, and one at Alloway's-Creek, where I met with Edward Tyler, a Friend on a religious Vifit from Europe, and John Alloway's Sykes, a Friend living near Crofwicks, in the ferfeys; here we had an open, fatisfactory Meeting: From whence I went to Salem, it being their Week-day- Salem. meeting, which was large, and to Edification of many. I was alloat Piles-Grove on Fifth-day, and at WoodberryCreek Sixth-day; in which laft Meeting the obedient PilesSon was encouraged, and the Difobedient earnestly Woodberry called home to his heavenly Father's Haufe. In this Creek. Journey I had John Bringburst, the younger, for my Fellow-traveller; his Father being unwilling that I fhould go the Journey alone..

After I had been at home fome Time, I, with fome others, went to the Yearly-meeting at Shrews Shrewsbury. bury, in East Jersey, which was on the 23d of the Eighth Month: It was exceeding large, and the quieteft and most fettled Meeting that ever I was at there; and many divine Truths were delivered therein. From thence I went to Manefquan, and had a Meeting, and then back to Shrewsbury, and fo to Middletown, where Middlewe had a Meeting in the Baptist Meeting-houfe, divers of whom were there, and glad of the Meeting; thence came back to Shrewsbury, and had a Meeting on the Firft-day, being the 30th of the Month: From whence, on my Return home, had Meetings at Mofes Robin's, Allen's-Town, at Crofwicks (where I met Allen's with divers of my old Friends) Borden-Town, and Crowicks. Mansfield; fome of which were large, open and fatisfac tory Meetings. After the laft Meeting, we went to Bur- Burlington lington, and next Day came home, accompanied by Frankfort. Richard Smith, jun. After being a few Days at home, I was fent for to Chefter, to the Marriage of John Lee Chefer. (who had failed feveral Voyages with me) Next Day 1 went to the Week-day-meeting at Providence, and on Providence. First-day was at Springfield; from whence I returned Springfield, home.

The 23d of the Ninth Month, I left home again, and went to Philadelphia, and from thence with Daniel Stanton, John Eafton, and John Proud, jun. (the two latter of Rhode-Ifland) to Radnor Meeting, and from thence to Goshen Meeting, and by the Coldness of the Weather, and croffing feveral Creeks, I got a Cold, which settled on my Lungs, fo that, in Converfation, I was hoarfe; but I was helped in Meetings to Admiration; for which I was truly thankful to the Almighty, the great Helper of his Servants and Children. We had an Evening-meeting with an antient Friend, who faid fhe had above 200 who called her Mother, being her Children by Blood and Marriage to the fourth Ge neration: We took our Leave of her, as never expecting to fee each other more, and parted in Tenderness of Heart. One of this Friend's Grandfons went with us to Concord, where, on a First-day, we had a very large Meeting, and an Evening-meeting at Mofes Mendenhall's; and the Remainder of the Week we had Birming Meetings at Birmingham, Kennet, New-Garden, Marlborough, and the Monthly-meeting at Center on the Seventh-day following, at which were many young People; for whofe Sakes I was drawn and moved, in my Exercise of Miniftry, to fhew the Rife and Defign of our Meetings of Difcipline.

First, That the fame Power that gathered us to be a People, inclined our Elders to establish thofe Meetings, and fettled them in moft Parts where we were gathered, and had Meetings for the Worfhip of God.

Secondly, They were advised to do their Bufinefs, and fpeak to their Affairs, in the Senfe of the fame Power, Spirit and Wisdom of Chrift, which, as it had raised us, would, as we kept to it, preserve us to be a People to the Praife of God's holy Name.

Thirdly, They were advifed, in doing their Bufinefs, not to run out into many unneceffary Words, which might lead to Contention, and fpending much Time to little Purpose; religious Affairs being done beft in a
