HE Writer of the following lines has the fincereft efteem for his Pedobaptift brethren: and thinks it neceffary, in this fhort Preface, to acquaint the Public with his reafons for writing on the fubject of Baptifm; and the fatirical manner in which he has combated his opponent. He prefumes that no ferious reader who is accquainted with the rife of the prefent contro verfy, and hath read Mr. De Courcy's numerous publications on the fubject, can be reafonably offended at the irony of this Poem, fince he encounters his literary antagonist with his own weapons.

Mr. Medley, who is well known to be a man of a truly catholic fpirit, was defired to baptize fome per- › fons at Shrewsbury. He preached on the occafion an extempore fermon, in which he afferted that fubmiffion to the ordinance of Baptifm, though not effential to falvation, was a neceffary part of evangelical obedience. Some detached parts of his difcourfe were, fome how or other, conveyed to Mr. D. Mr. D. immediately published an eighteen-penny pamphlet in vindication of infant fprinkling, entitled, A Letter to a Baptift Minifter. This pamphlet was anfwered by Mr. Medley. The anfwer produced a three filling volume, called, The Rejoinder, with an advertif ment of a fecond part, which, it is fuppofed, is fpeedily to follow. in the interval of thefe publications, fome
