PREFACE.

In

FOR several years I have been examining the question of slavery with great care and attention. Once a slaveholder myself, born, brought up, and educated in the midst of slaveholders and slaves, I first investigated this subject with all the zeal and energy of the warmest supporters of the so-called "peculiar institution." time I found myself perplexed with the results of my own arguments. I discovered my error: I became convinced that slaveholding was unrighteous: I abandoned it; and was conscientiously constrained to give freedom to upwards of thirty slaves. I have had to sacrifice a large portion of my patrimony, to exile myself from my native state, and to be cut off from the enjoyments of home, of friendship, and of brotherhood. I feel, therefore, that I have a claim to be heard.
