sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 4. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God. Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me. 5. From a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 6. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. 1. A LESSON CXLII. THE STRANGER AND HIS FRIEND. "Ye have done it unto me."- MATT. XXV. 40. POOR wayfaring man of grief Hath often crossed me on my way, Who sued so humbly for relief That I could never answer "Nay: 2 Once, when my scanty meal was spread, He entered, not a word he spake, Just perishing for want of bread. I gave him all he blessed it, brake, And ate, but gave me part again; 3. I spied him where a fountain burst Clear from the rock: his strength was gone; I ran to raise the sufferer up; Thrice from the stream he drained my cup, 4. 'Twas night; the floods were out; it blew A winter hurricane aloof; I heard his voice abroad, and flew To bid him welcome to my roof; I warmed, I clothed, I cheered my guest, Then made the hearth my bed, and seemed 5. Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death Wine, oil, refreshment; he was healed: And peace bound up my broken heart. 6. In prison I saw him next, condemned 7. Then in a moment to my view The stranger darted from disguise; My Saviour stood before mine eyes; LESSON CXLIII. JUDGMENT. Rev. xx. 11-xxi. 7. A ND I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 2. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 3. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it ; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them; and they were judged every man according to their works. 4. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. 5. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 6. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 7. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying; neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away. 8. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write; for these words are true and faithful. 9. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 10. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. SILENTLY. 1 Silently! silently Ope and close the school-room door; Carefully! carefully Walk upon the floor. Let us, let us strive to be Passing time away 2 Cheerfully! cheerfully Let us in our work engage, With a zeal, with a zeal Far beyond our age; And if we shall chance to find Never borrow fear. 3 Now we sing! now we sing, Gayly as the birds of spring, As they hop, as they hop On the high tree-top. Let us be as prompt as they Happily! happily Passing time away. |
