Q5. What Inftrument doth Christ use?

A. Angels are miniftring Spirits to him, Heb. i. 14. Are they not all miniftring Spirits, fent forth to minifter for them who fhall be Heirs of Salvation? And Men, yea the worst of Men, Rev. xii. 16. And the Earth helped the Woman, and the Earth opened her Mouth and swallowed up the Flood which the Dragon caft out of his Mouth.

Q. 6. In what Manner doth Chrift rule the World?

A. By fupreme Power, Rev. ix. 16. He hath on his Vefture and on his Thigh a name written, King of Kings, Lord of Lords. And perfect Wisdom, Eph. i. 11. In whom alfo we have obtained an Inheritance, being predeftinated according to the Purpofe of him, who worketh all Things after the Counsel of his own Will.

A. That the Church is faved amidst all Dangers, Jer. xxx. 11. For I am with thee, faith the Lord, to fave thee; though I make a full End of all Nations, whither I have scattered thee, will I not make a full End of thee.

A. That the godly may fafely trust to Chrift's Care, 2 Chron. xvi. 9. For the Eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole Earth, to fhew himself ftrong in the Behalf of them whofe Heart is perfect towards him.

A. That all Plots against the Church fhall furely be defeated, Ifa. liv. 17. No Weapon that is formed against thee fhall profper.

A. It gives the Saints full Satisfaction in all Conditions, Rom. viii. 28. And we know that all Things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are called according to his Purpose.

Of Chrift's Humiliation.

HEREIN did Chrift's Humiliation confift?

A. Chrift's Humiliation confifted in his being born, and that in a low Condition, made under the Law, undergoing the Miseries of this Life, the Wrath of God, and the curfed Death of the Crofs; in being buried, and continuing under the Power of Death for a Time.

Q.1. What doth Chrift's humbling of himself import ? A. His voluntarinefs in the deepeft Point of Self-denial, Pfal. xl. 7. Then faid I, lo I come, in the Volume of the Book it is written of me.

Q. 2. What was the firft Act of Chrift's Humiliation? A. His taking Man's Nature on him, with all its finless Infirmities, Rom. viii. 3. God fending his own Son, in the Likeness of finful Flesh, and for Sin condemned Sin in the Flesh. Q3. What is the fecond Part of his Humiliation ?

A. That mean Life he lived in this World, which obfcured his Divine Glory, Mark vi. 3. Is not this the Carpenter, the Son of Mary?

Q4. What was the first Thing in Chrift's Life that humbled him?

A. The Poverty of it, Mat. viii. 20. And Jesus faith unto him, The Foxes have Holes, and the Birds of the Air have Nefts; but the Son of Man hath not where to lay his Head. What was the fecond Thing in his Life that hum

A. The Temptations of Satan, to which he was subject, Mat. iv. 1. Then was Jefus led up of the Spirit into the Wilderness, to be tempted of the Devil, and that for our fakes, Heb. ii. 17. Wherefore in all Things it behoveth him to be made like unto his Brethren, v. 18. For in that he himself bath suffered, being tempted, he is able to fuccour them that are tempted.

Q6. What was the third Thing in Chrift's Life that humbled him?

A. His Subjection to the Law, Gal. iv. 4. But when the fulness of the Time was come, God fent forth his Son, made of a Woman, made under the Law.

Q7. What was the fourth Thing in Christ's Life that humbled him?

A. The Revilings and Contradictions of Sinners, Heb. xii. 3. For confider him that endured fuch Contradictions of Sinners against himself.

Q. 8. Wherein was Chrift humbled in his Death?

A. His Death was painful and ignominious, Gal. iii. 13. Chrift hath redeemed us from the Curfe of the Law, being made a Curfe for us. For it is written, curfed is every one that hangeth on a Tree. Made a Curfe for us, and deferted in it, Mat. xxvii. 46. And about the ninth Hour, Jefus cried with a loud Voice, Jaying; Eli, Eli, Lamafabachthani, that is to fay, My God, my God, why haft thou forfaken me;

A. That Lowlinefs and Humility becomes Christ's Followers, Mat. xi. 29. Take my Yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek, and lowly in Heart.

Q. 10. What is the fecond Inference?

A. That Chrift's Love to Sinners is astonishingly great, 2 Cor. viii. 9. For ye know the Grace of our Lord Jefus Chrift, that though he was rich, yet for your fakes he became poor, that ye through his Poverty might be made rich.

Q. 11. What is the third Inference?

A. Chriftians fhould be ready to fuffer for Christ, 1 Pet. iv. 1. Forafmnch as Chrift hath suffered for us in the Flesh; arm yourfelves likewife with the fame mind; for he that hath Juffered in the Flesh, hath ceafed from Sin.

Q. 12. What is the last Inference?

A. That Humiliation is the true Way to Exaltation, Mat. xxiii. 12. And whofoever shall exalt himself, fhall be abafed; and he that fhall humble himself, shall be exalted.

Of Christ's Exaltation.

A. Chrift's Exaltation confifts in his rifing again from the Dead on the third Day; in afcending up into Heaven, in fitting at the right Hand of God the Father, and in coming to judge the World at the laft Day. Q1. What is the first Step of Chrift's Exaltation ?

A. His Refurrection from the Dead.

Q. 2. How doth his Resurrection appear ?

A. By the Scripture Prophefies accomplisht in him, I Cor. xv. 4. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third Day, according to the Scriptures.

Q. 3. Why did Chrift rife again?

A. To establish our Faith, and abolish our Sins, 1 Cor. xv. 17. And if Christ be not rifen, your Faith is vain, you are yet in your Sins.

Q4. What other End was there of Christ's Refurrection? A. To declare his Divine Power, Rom. i 4. And declared to be the Son of God with Power, according to the Spirit of Holiness, by the Refurrection from the Dead. And to evidence the fulness of bis Satisfaction, John xvi. 10. Of Righteoufuefs, because I go to my Father, and ye fee me no more.

Q5. Did Chrift rife in the fame Body he laid down? A. It was substantially the fame, John xx. 27. Then faith be to Thomas, Reach hither thy Finger, and behold Hands; and reach hither thy Hand, and thruft it into my Side, and be not Faithlefs, but believing.

Q. 6. What doth Chrift's Refurrection teach us?

A. The certainty of Refurrection after Death, 1 Cor. xv. 20. But now is Chrift rifen from the Dead, and become the fift Fruits of them that flept.

Q. 7. What was the fecond Step of Chrift's Exaltation ? A. His Afcention after forty Days into Heaven, Acts i. 2, 3. Until the Day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghoft had given Commandments unto the Apofiles, whom he had chofen, to whom alfo he fhewed himself alive after his Paffion, by many infallible Proofs, being feen of them forty Days, and Speaking of the Things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

Q. 8. Why did Chrift ftay fo long on Earth?

A. To affure the Truth of his Refurre&tion, and to fettle the due Government of his Church, Acts i. 2, 3. Q. 9. For what End did he afcend?

A. To take Poffeffion of his Glory, John xvii. 5. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own felf, with the Glory which I had with thee before the World was.

And that

as our fore-runner, Heb. vi. 20. Whither the fore-runner is for us entred, even Jefus, &c.

Q. 10. In what Manner did Christ afcend?

A. Triumphantly, and magnificently, Pfal. xlvii. 5. God is gone up with a Shout, the Lord with a Sound of a Trumpet. Q. 11. What doth his Afcenfion teach us?

A. Heavenly-mindedness, Col. iii. 1, 2. If ye then be rifen with Chrift, feek thofe Things which are above, where Chrift fitteth at the right Hand of God; fet your Affections on Things above, and not on Things on the Earth. And an Encouragement in our Chriftian Race, Heb. xii. 1, 2. Wherefore feeing we also are compassed about with so great a Cloud of Witneffes, let us lay afide every Weight, and the Sin which doth Jo easily befet us, and let us run with Patience the Race that is jet before us, looking unto Jefus the Author and Finisher of our Faith. Who for the Joy that was fet before him, endured the Crofs, defpifing the Shame, and is fate down at the right Hand of the Throne of God.

HAT was the Third Degree of Chrift's
Exaltation?

A. His fitting at God's right Hand in Heaven, Heb. i. 3. When he bad by himself purged our Sins, fate down on the right Hand of the Majefty on high.

Q. 2. What doth God's right Hand fignify?

A. A State of Honour, Heb. i. 13. But to which of the Angels, faid he, at any Time, Sit on my right Hand until I make thine Enemies thy Footstool? And Power, Mat, xxvi. 64. Hereafter fhall ye fee the Son of Man fitting on the right Hand of

Power.

Q3. What is implied in Chrift's fitting there?

A. That his Work on Earth is finished, Heb. x. 11, 12. But this Man after he had offered one Sacrifice for Sin, for ever Jate down on the right Hand of God.
