PREFACE

HAVE inserted in the correspondence of this volume a letter which is not usually so included, namely, that addressed by Antony to Hirtius and Octavian, and preserved, as it seems, in its entirety, in the thirteenth Philippic. It falls easily into its place, and is nearly the only statement we have of Antony's view of the political situation during his siege of Mutina.

I take this opportunity of giving a list of additions and corrections which I hope my readers will make in the text of the translation and notes. Most of them I have discovered myself, but some have been pointed out by friends and by critics in the press. Secondly, I have put together the alterations of the text which I have made by my own conjecture.

I. ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS.
