Thus did Mr. Bonnell difcharge the great Duty of Prayer, in every part of it, both Pablick and Private: And as he Pray'd without ceafing; fo he was a conftant and devout Gueft

Gueft at the Lord's-Table: And therefore I now come to fhew, what his Practice was, with Refpect to the Holy Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.

He was very early touch'd, with a lively Senfe of his Obligations, to commemorate our Saviours Paffion, in that Holy Mystery; and I find from his own Meditations, that as he improv'd in Knowledge and Years, his Defires after that Divine Feaft, grew stronger ftill. For there he found all the endearing Comforts of Religion; God's Goodness difplay'd, and His Juftice fatisfi'd: The Contemplation of which, gives the truest Peace and Joy to Humble and Penitent Minds.

A great part of his Private Writings conift of Meditations, preparative to the Sacrament, or Thanksgivings after it: So that for feveral Years of his Life, hardly a Week paffed over, but he put down fome Communion Thoughts, in Writing; fome Meditation or Prayer, upon the Love of God to Mankind; or fome part of our Saviour's Life, or Sufferings; efpecially, during the late Troubles, when he needed the Supports of Religion moft, and feems to have enjoy'd them, in a greater degree than at other times.

After his Settling in Dublin, His conftant Practice for many Years, was, to Communicate twice every Month: Befide all the folemn Times, when the Holy Sacrament is adminiftred. But fuch longing Defires had he, after that facred Memorial of our SaviM 2

our's Love; that he cou'd not allow himfelf to want it, whenever it might be had; fo that at last, he Receiv'd every Lord'sDay.

Tho' his Life was a conftant Preparation for the Holy Communion, yet he had very ftrict and particular Retirements in order to put his Mind into that Divine Frame, which he judg'd so necessary, for that near and folemn Approach to God: And these happy Retirements, were employ'd in strict Examinations of his Life; and a severe enquiry after his smallest Failings; and the warmest Meditations upon the Love of God, and bitter Paffion of our Bieffed Saviour. And in his latter Years, he Lamented nothing more, than that his Time was fo taken up with Bufinefs, that his Retirements were interrupted; and confequently, his Thoughts not fo much his own, as they us'd to be And particularly, it troubled him, that he was often forc'd to be late at his Office upon Saturdays; left his going to the Sacrament next Day, might have an ill . Effect upon his Servants; and tempt them to prefume too far, and approach the Lord's Table, without fufficient Preparation : For tho' (as he wou'd fometimes fay) 1 fteal Minutes at my Office; they are not enough to fatisfie my Self, much less to give good Example to

Others.

As it was his great Study, to Prepare himfelf aright, for the Holy Sacrament, that fo he might come to it, with a truly Penitent

Heart,
