English For Use III PREFACE ENGLISH FOR USE, Book Three, applies for pupils of the seventh and eighth grades, the fundamental principles of pedagogy stated in the introduction to Book One of the series. By careful, inductive development and ample application of the essentials of good English, it aims to establish correct habits of expression. At the same time, it presents the technical requirements of form and structure in such a way that they will serve as criteria for choice of the correct form of expression. Standards for decision and criticism by the class rather than merely by the teacher, and a habitual personal censorship of his own speech by the pupil are emphasized from beginning to end of the book. The place of formal grammar. The vague helplessness in English displayed by pupils who enter the high school from courses of instruction lacking a backbone of sound grammatical structure has brought a new emphasis to the study of English grammar. At the same time, there is a frank recognition of the fact that the old emphasis on rules and classifications was largely futile. The authors of ENGLISH FOR USE believe that the minimum essentials of English grammar must be carefully and exactingly taught and thoroughly applied.
