2 "And the LORD faid unto Jofhua, See, I have given into thine Hand Jericho, and the King thereof, and the mighty Men of Valour.

3 And ye fhall compafs the City, all ye Men of War, and go round about the City once: thus fhalt thou do fix Days.

4 And feven Priests fhall bear before the Ark feven Trumpets of Rams Horns: and the feventh Day ye fhall compafs the City feven times, and the Priefts fhall blow with the Trumpets.

5 And it fhall come to pafs that when they make a long Blaft with the Ram's Horn, and when ye hear the Sound of the Trumpet, all the People fhall fhout with a great Shout and the Wall of the City fhall fall down flat, and the People fhall afcend up every Man ftraight before him.

6 And Jofhua called the Priefts, and faid unto them, Take up the ARK of the Covenant, and let feven Priefts bear feven Trumpets of Rams Horns before the Ark of the LORD.

7 And he faid unto the People, Pafs on, and compass the City, and let him that is armed pafs on before the Ark of the LORD.

8 And it came to pafs when Jofhua had fpoken unto the People, that the feven Priefts bearing the feven Trumpets of Rams Horns, paffed on before the LORD, and blew with the Trumpets: and the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD followed them.

9 And the armed Men went before the Priests that blew with the Trumpets, and the Rereward came after the Ark, the Pricfts going on, and blowing with the Trumpets.

10 And Jofhua had commanded the People, faying, Ye fhall not fhout nor make any Noife with your Voice, neither fhall any Word proceed out of your Mouth, until the Day I bid you fhout, then fhall ye fhout.

11 So the ARK of the LORD compaffed the City, going about it once and they came into the Camp, and lodged in the Camp.

12 And Jofhua rofe early in the Morning, and the Priefts took up the ARK of the LORD.

13 And feven Priefts bearing feven Trumpets of Rams Horns before the Ark of the LORD, went on continually, and blew with the Trumpets: and the armed Men went before them, but the Rereward came after the Ark of the LORD, the Priests going on, and blowing with the Trumpets.

14 And the fecond Day they compaffed the City once, and returned into the Camp: fo they did fix Days.

15 And it came to pafs on the feventh Day, that they rofe early about the Dawning of the Day, and compafled the City after the fame manner, feven times: only on that Day they compaffed the City feven times.

16 And it came to pass at the feventh time, when the Priests blew with the Trumpets, Jofhua faid unto the People, Shout, for the LORD hath given you the City.

17 And the City fhall be accurfed, even it and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the Harlot fhall live, fhe and all that are with her in the Houfe, because the hid the Meflengers that we fent.

18 And you in any wife keep yourselves from the accurfed Thing, left you make yourselves accurfed when ye take of the accurfed Thing, and make the Camp of Ifrael a Curfe, and trouble it.

19 But all the Silver and Gold, and Veffels of Brass and Iron, are confecrated unto the LORD: they fhall come into the Treafury of the LORD.

20" So the People SHOUTED when the Priests blew with the Trumpets and it came to pass when the People heard the Sound of the Trumpet, and the People fhouted with a great Shout, that the WALL FELL down FLAT, fo that the People went up into the City, every Man ftraight before him, and they took the City.

Heb. xi. 30 BY FAITH the WALLS of JERICHO FELL DOWN, after they were compaffed about feven Days.

2 Cor. x 3 Though we walk in the Flesh, we do not war after the Flesh:

S CASTING down IMAGINATIONS, and every high Thing that EXALTETH itself AGAINST the KNOWLEDGE of GOD, and bringing into Captivity

every THOUGHT to the OBEDIENCE of CHRIST.

21 And they utterly deftroyed all that was in the City, both Man and Woman, Young and Old, and Ox, and Sheep, and Afs, with the Edge of the Sword.

25 And Joshua faved Rahab the Harlot alive, and her Father's Houfhold, and all that he had; and fhe dwelleth in Ifrael even unto this Day: becaufe fhe hid the Meffengers which Jofhua fent to fpy out Jericho.

25 And Joshua adjured them at that time, faying, Curfed be the Man before the LORD that rifeth up, and buildeth this City Jericho he fhall lay the Foundation thereof

in

in his Firft-born, and in his youngest Son fhall he fet up the Gates of it.

27 So the LORD was with Jofhua, and his FAME was noised throughout all the Country.

CHAP. VII.

The Ifraelites are fmitten at Ai. 6 Joshua's Complaint. 10 GOD inftructeth him what to do. 16 Achan is taken by Lot: 19 His Confeffion: 22 He and all he had are deftroyed in the Valley of Achor.

Ver. 1 OUT the Children of Ifrael committed a Trefpafs in the accurfed Thing for Achan of the Tribe of Judah, took of the accurfed Thing: and the Anger of the LORD was kindled against the Children of Ifracl.

z And Joshua fent Men from Jericho to Ai, which is befide Beth-aven, on the Eaft-fide of Beth-el, and fpake unto them, faying, Go up and view the Country. And the Men went up and viewed Ai.

3 And they returned to Joshua, and faid unto him, Let not all the People go up: but let about two or three thoufand Men go up and fmite Ai, and make not all the People to labour thither; for they are but few.

4 So there went up thither of the People about three thousand Men, and they fled before the Men of Ai.

5 And the Men of Ai fmote about thirty and fix Men : for they chafed them from before the Gate even unto Shebarim, and fmote them in the going down: wherefore the Hearts of the People melted, and became as Water.

6 And Joshua rent his Clothes, and fell to the Earth upon his Face, before the Ark of the LORD, until the Eventide, he and the Elders of Ifrael, and put Duft upon their Heads.

7 And Joshua faid, Alas, O LORD GOD, wherefore haft thou at all brought thefe People over Jordan, to deliver us into the Hand of the Amorites, to deftroy us? would to GOD we had been content, and dwelt on the other fide Jordan.

8 O LORD, what fhall I fay, when Ifrael turneth their Backs before their Enemies.

9 For the Canaanites and all the Inhabitants of the Land fhall hear of it, and fhall environ us round, and cut off our Name

:

Name from the Earth and what wilt thou Do unto thy GREAT NAME?

10 And the LORD faid unto Joshua, Get thee up, where, fore lieft thou thus upon thy Face?

11 Ifrael hath SINNED, and they have alfo tranfgreffed my Covenant which I commanded them for they have even taken of the accurfed Thing, and have also stolen, and diffembled alfo, and they have put it even amongst their own Stuff.

12 Therefore the Children of Ifrael could not ftand before their Enemies, but turned their Backs before their Enemies, because they were accurfed neither will I be with you any more, except you deftroy the Accurfed from amongst you.

13 Up, fanctify the People, and fay, Sanctify yourselves against To-morrow: for thus faith the LORD GOD of Ifrael, There is an accurfed Thing in the midst of thee, O Ifrael thou canst not stand before thine Enemies, until ye take away the accurfed Thing from among you.

14 In the Morning therefore ye fhall be brought according to your Tribes and it fhall be that the Tribe which the LORD taketh, fhall come according to the Families thereof; and the Family which the LORD fhall take, fhall come by Houfholds; and the Houfhold which the LORD fhall take, fhall come Man by Man.

15 And it shall be that he that is taken with the accurfed Thing fhall be burnt with Fire, he and all that he hath : because he hath tranfgreffed the Covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought Folly in Ifrael.

16 So Joshua rofe up early in the Morning, and brought Ifrael by their Tribes; and the Tribe of Judah was taken.

17 And he brought the Family of Judah; and he took the Family of the Zarhites: and he brought the Family of the Zarhites Man by Man; and Zabdi was taken :

18 And he brought his Houfhold Man by Man; and Achan of the Tribe of Judah was taken.

19 And Joshua faid unto Achan, My Son, give, I pray thee, Glory to the LORD GOD of Ifrael, and make Confeffion unto him; and tell me now what thou haft done, hide it not from me.

20 And Achan anfwered Jofhua, and faid, Indeed I have finned against the LORD GOD of Ifrael, and thus and thus have I done.

21 When

21 When I faw among the Spoils a goodly BABYLONISH GARMENT, and two hundred Shekels of Silver, and a Wedge of Gold of fifty Shekels weight, then I COVETED them, and took them, and behold they are hid in the Earth in the midst of my Tent, and the Silver under it.

22 So Jofhua fent Meflengers, and they ran unto the Tent, and behold, it was hid in his Tent, and the Silver under it.

23 And they took them out of the midft of the Tent, and brought them unto Jofhua, and unto all the Children of Ifrael, and laid them out before the LORD.

24 And Joshua and all Ifrael with him, took Achan, and the Silver, and the Garment, and the Wedge of Gold, and his Sons, and his Daughters, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the Valley of Achor.

25 And Jofhua faid, Why haft thou troubled us? the LORD fhall trouble thee this Day. And all Ifrael ftoned him with Stones, and burned them with Fire, after they had ftoned them with Stones.

26 And they raised up over him a great Heap of Stones unto this Day: So the LORD turned from the Fierceness of his Anger wherefore the Name of that Place was called, The Valley of Achor unto this Day.

CHAP. VIII.

1 GOD encourageth Joshua. 3 The Stratagem whereby Ai was taken. 30 Joshua buildeth an Altar, 32 writeth the Law on Stones, 33 propoundeth Blefings and Curfings.

Ver. 1

'A

ND the LORD faid unto Jofhua, Fear not, neither be thou difmayed: take all the People of War with thee, and arife, go up to Ai: fee, I have given into thy Hand the King of Ai, and his People, and his City, and his Land.

2 And thou fhalt do to Ai, and her King, as thou didst unto Jericho and her King: only the Spoil thereof, and the Cattle thereof fhall ye take for a Prey unto yourfelves: lay thee an Ambush for the City behind it.

3 So Joshua arofe, and all the People of War, to go up against Ai and Joshua chofe out thirty thousand mighty Men of Valour, and fent them away by Night.

4 And he commanded them, faying, Behold, ye fhall lie
