in wait against the City, even behind the City: go not far from the City, but be ye all ready. 5 And I, and all the People that are with me, will approach unto the City and it fhall come to pafs when they come out against us, as at the firft, that we will flee before them. 6 (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn. them from the City; for they will fay, They flee before us, as at the firft: therefore we will flee before them. 7 Then ye shall rife up from the Ambush, and feize upon the City for the LORD your God will deliver it into your Hand. & And it shall be when ye have taken the City, that ye fhall fet the City on fire according to the Commandment of the LORD fhall ye do. See, I have commanded you. 14 And it came to pafs when the King of Ai faw it, that they hafted and rofe up early, and the Men of the City went out against Ifrael to Battle, he and all his People, at a Time appointed, before the Plain; but he wift not that there were Liers in Ambush against him behind the City. 15 And Joshua and all Ifrael made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the Wilderness. 16 And all the People that were in Ai, were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the City. 17 And there was not a Man left in Ai, or Beth-el, that' went not out after Ifrael: and they left the City open, and purfued after Ifrael. 18 And the LORD faid unto Jofhua, Stretch out the Spear that is in thy Hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine Hand. And Jofhua ftretched out the Spear that he had in his Hand toward the City. 19 And the Ambush rofe quickly out of their Place, and they ran as foon as he had stretched out his Hand: and they entred into the City, and took it, and hasted, and fet the City on fire. 23 And the King of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua. 25 And fo it was, that all that fell that Day, both of Men and Women, were twelve thoufand, even all the Men of Ai. 30 Then Jofhua built an Altar unto the LORD GOD of Ifrael in Mount Ebal. 31 As Mofes the Servant of the LORD commanded the Children of Ifrael, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Mofes, an Altar of whole Stones, over which no Man hath lift up any Iron: and they offered thereon Burnt-offerings unto the LORD, and facrificed Peace-offerings. 32 And he wrote there upon the Stones a Copy of the Law of Mofes, which he wrote in the prefence of the Children of Ifrael. 33 And all Ifrael, and their Elders and Officers, and their Judges, ftood on this fide the Ark, and on that fide, before the Priests the Levites, which bare the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD, as well the Stranger as he that was born among them; half of them over against Mount Gerizzim, and half of them over against Mount Ebal as Mofes the Servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they fhould bless the People of Ifrael. 34 And afterward he read all the Words of the Law, the BLESSINGS and CURSINGS, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law. 35 There was not a Word of all that Mofes commanded, which Joshua read not before all the Congregation of Ifrael with the Women, and the Little ones, and the Strangers that were converfant among them. CHA P. IX. The Kings combine against Ifrael. 3 The Gibeonites by Craft obtain a League, 16 For which they are condemned to perpetual Bondage. СНАР. Х. 1 Five Kings war against Gibeon: 6 Joshua rescueth it: 10 GOD fighteth against them with Hail-ftones. 12 The Sun and Moon ftand still at the Word of Joshua. 43 Joshua's Return. Ver. No OW it came to pass, when Adonizedek King of Jerufalem had heard how Jofhua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it, (as he had done to Jericho and her King, fo he had done to Ai and her King) and how the Inhabitants of Gibeon had made Peace with Ifrael, and were among them; That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great City, as one of the Royal Cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the Men thereof were mighty. 3 Wherefore Adonizedek King of Jerufalem, fent unto Hoham King of Hebron, and unto Piram King of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia King of Lachish, and unto Debir King of Eglon, faying, 4 Come unto me, and help me, that we may fmite Gibeon for it hath made Peace with Joshua, and with the Children of Ifrael. 5 Therefore the five Kings of the Amorites, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their Hofts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made War against it. 6 And the Men of Gibeon fent unto Jofhua, to the Camp to Gilgal, faying, Slack not thy Hand from thy Servants; come up to us quickly, and fave us, and help us : for all the Kings of the Amorites that dwell in the Mountains, are gathered together against us. 7 So Jofhua afcended from Gilgal, he, and all the People of War with him, and all the mighty Men of Valour. 8 And the LORD faid unto Joshua, FEAR THEM NOT: for I have delivered them into thine Hand; there fhall not a Man of them ftand before thee. 9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all Night. 10 And the LORD DISCOMFITED them before Ifrael, and flew them with a great Slaughter at Gibeon, and chafed them along the Way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and fmote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah. Pfal. xviii. 13 The LORD allo thundered in the Heavens, and the HIGHEST gave his Voice; HAIL-STONES and Coals of Fire. 11 w And it came to pass as they fled from before Ifrael, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD caft down GREAT STONES from Heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died they were more which died with HAIL-STONES, than they whom the Children of Ifrael flew with the Sword. 12 Then fpake Jofhua to the LORD in the Day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the Children of Ifrael, and he said in 14 Yea, he fent out his Arrows, and SCATTERED them; and he fhot out Lightnings, and DISCOMFITED them. the fight of Ifrael, SUN, STAND THOU STILL upon Gibeon, and thou MOON in the Valley of Ajalon. Land in Indignation, thou didst threffi the Heathen in Anger. 13 Thou wenteft forth for the SALVATION OF THY PEOPLE, even for SALVATION with thine ANOINTED; thou woundedft the Head out of the House of the Wicked. 13 And the SUN STOOD STILL, and the MOON STAYED, until the People had avenged themfelves upon their Enernies. Is not this written in the Book of Jafher? So the SUN STOOD STILL in the midst of Heaven, and hasted not to go down about a WHOLE DAY. 14 And there was NO DAY like that BEFORE it, or AFTER it, that the LORD HEARKNED unto the Voice of a MAN for the LORD FOUGHT FOR ISRAEL. 15 And Joshua returned, and all Ifrael with him unto the Camp to Gilgal. 16 But these five Kings fled, and hid themselves in a Cave at Makkedah. 18 And Joshua faid, Roll great Stones upon the Mouth of the Cave, and fet Men by it for to keep them. 21 And all the People returned to the Camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace; none moved his Tongue against any of the Children of Ifrael. 22 Then faid Jofhua, Open the Mouth of the Cave, and bring out thofe five Kings unto me out of the Cave. 23 And they did fo, and brought forth those five Kings unto him out of the Cave. 24 And it came to pafs when they brought out thofe Kings unto Jofhua, that Jofhua called for all the Men of Ifrael, and faid unto the Captains of the Men of War which went with him, Come near, put your Feet upon the Necks of thefe Kings. And they came near, and put their Feet upon the Necks of them. 25 And JOSHUA said unto them, Fear not, nor be DISMAYED, be STRONG and of GOOD COURAGE: for thus fhall the LORD DO to all your Enemies against whom ye fight. 26 And afterwards Jofhua fmote them, and flew them, and hanged them on five Trees and they were hang Pfal. xviii. 31 Who is GOD, fave the LORD or WHO is a Rock, fave our GOD? ed upon the Trees until the Right Hand hath holden me up, and Evening. 28 And that Day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the Edge of the Sword. 29 Then Joshua paffed from Makkedah, and all Ifrael with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah. 30 And the LORD delivered it also into the Hand of Ifrael. 31 And Joshua paffed from Libnah, and all Ifrael with him, unto Lachifh, and encamped against it. thy Gentleness hath made me great. 37 I have purfued mine Enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were confu med. 38 I have wounded them that they were not able to rife; they are fallen under my Feet.
