Ps. cxliii. 1. Hear my prayer, for the enemy hath persecuted my soul.

Acts iv. 18. The rulers of the Jews commanded the apostles not to speak nor teach in the name of Jesus.

Ver. 24. The disciples prayed and said, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants, that with boldness they may speak thy word.

Ver. 31. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and spake the word of God with boldness.

Rev. vi. 9. Under the altar in heaven John saw the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held.

Ver. 10. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, how long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood upon them that dwell on the earth. CCII. Prayer in trouble, instances thereof. Neh. ix. 32. O God, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us. Ps. iv. 1. Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness, thou hast heard me in distress.

xx. 1. The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble.

xxii. 11. Be not far from me for trouble is near, for there is no man to help me.

xxv. 17. The troubles of my heart are enlarged, O bring thou me out of my distress.

Ver. 22. Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.

xxx. 7. Thou didst hide thy face and I was troubled, I cried unto the Lord.

Ver. 8. Thou hast girded me with gladness. Ver. 11.

xxxi. 9. Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am in trouble. Ver. 10. My life is spent with grief.

xl. 1. I waited for the Lord, he brought me out of a horrible pit. Ver. 2.

answer me.

lxxxviii. 2. Let my prayer come before thee, for I am full of trouble. Ver. 3.

Ver. 7. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me. Ver. 8. Forsake not the work of thine own hands.

cxlii. 2. I poured out my complaint, I shewed before him my trouble.

Ver. 3. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path.

cxliii. 11. For thy righteousness sake, bring my soul out of trouble. Isa. xxvi. 16. O Lord in trouble have they visited thee, they' poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.

xxxiii. 20. O Lord, be gracious unto us, be thou our salvation in time of trouble.

CCIII. Of prayerless persons, or of not praying. Job xxi. 15. The wicked say, what is the Almighty that we should serve him? and what profit shall we have if we pray unto him? Mal. iii. 14.

xxxvi. 13. Hypocrites cry not when he bindeth them.

Ps. x. 4. The wicked through the pride of his countenance will not seek after God? God is not in all his thoughts.

xiv. 4. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as bread, and call not upon the Lord. Ps. liii. 4. .

Isa. xliii. 22. Thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob, thou hast been weary of me, O Israel, &c.

Ver. 28. Therefore have I profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to the robbers.

Jer. x. 25. Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name. Ps. lxxix. 6.

Dan. ix. 13. All this evil is come upon us, yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our ini. quities, and understand thy truth.

Ver. 14. Therefore hath the Lord watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us.

CCIV. The prayers of hypocrites. Ps. lxxviii. 34. When God slew them then they sought him and enquired early after God.

Ver. 36. Nevertheless they flattered him with their tongues.
Ver. 37. Their heart was not right with him. Ps. 1. 16.

Ezek. xxxiii. 31. With their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Isa. xxix. 14. Jer. xii. 2. Matt. vi. 6. When thou prayest thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.

xv. 8. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

Ver. 9. In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

xxiii. 14. Woe unto you hypocrites, for ye devour widows houses, and for a pretence make long prayers. Mark xii. 40.

CCV. Prayers of the wicked not acceptable to God. Job xxxv. 13. God will not hear vanity.

Ps. lxvi. 11. If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.

cix. 7. Let the prayer of the wicked become a sin.

Prov. i. 27. When distress and anguish cometh, then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer, they shall seek me carly but they shall not find me.

Ver. 29. For that they hated knowledge, and did not chuse the fear of the Lord.

xv. 8. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord. Ch. xxi. 27.

Isa. i. 4. Ah! sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity.

Ver. 11. To what purpose is the multitude of you sacrifices to me, saith the Lord?

Ver. 15. When ye spread forth your hands I will hide mine eyes from you, when ye make many prayers I will not hear; your hands

are full of blood.

lix. 1. i he Lord's hand is not shortened that it cannot save, nor his ear heavy that it cannot hear.

Ver. 2. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you that he will not hear. Isa. Ixvi. 3.

Jer. vi. 19. Behold I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words nor to my law, but rejected it.

Ver. 20. Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me. Ch. vii. 20, 21, 22: Amos v. 22, 23.

xi. 10. They are turned back to the iniquities of their fore-fathers which refused to hear my words.

Jer. xi. 11. Therefore thus saith the Lord, I will bring evil upon them, and though they cry unto me I will not hearken unto them. Ver. 14. Pray not thou for this people, neither lift up a cry nor prayer for them, for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble. See Ch. xiv. 11, 12. Ezek. viii. 18. OF PRAISING GOD.

CCVI. Praise and thanks due unto God, and required by him from the righteous. Exod. xv. 1. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders.

1 Chron. xvi. 25. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised. Ps. xlviii. 1.

Ps. xlvii. 7. God is King of all the earth, sing ye praises with understanding.

1. 14. Offer unto God thanksgiving, and pay thy vows to the Most High.

Ver. 23. Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me.

lxvi. 2. Sing forth the honour of his name, make his praise glorious. Ver. 4. All the earth shall sing to thy holy name.

Ixviii. 4. Sing unto God, sing praises to his name, extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH.

Ver. 32. Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth.

lxix. 30. I will praise the name of God with a song, I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

Ver. 31. This shall please the Lord better than an ox or bullock. xcii. 1. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High.

Ps. xcii. 2. To shew forth thy living kindness every morning, and thy faithfulness every night. Ps. cxxxv. 3.

xcvi. 2. Sing unto the Lord, bless his name, shew forth his salvation from day to day.

cvii. 32. Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.

cxlv. 3. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, his greatness is unsearchable. Ps. xcvi. 4.

cl. 6. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord.

Isa. xiii. 8. My glory will I not give to another, nor my praise to graven images..

xlii. 10. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth. Ch. xliii. 21. Jer. xx. 13.

Phil. iv. 6. In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

Col. ii.7. Abounding in faith, with thanksgiving.

iii. 15. Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which ye are called, and be ye thankful.

1 Pet. ii. 9. Ye are a chosen generation, to shew forth the praises of him that called you.

PRAISE.

CCVII. Praises from the wicked unacceptable to God. Amos iv. 2. The Lord will take you away with hooks.

Ver. 5. Offer a thanksgiving with leaven, for this liketh you.

Ver. 6. I have given you cleanness of teeth, and want of bread, &c. v. 22. Though ye offer burnt-offerings, and meat-offerings, I will not accept them.

Ver. 24. But let judgment run down like waters, &c.

Luke xviii. 11. The Pharisee said, God I thank thee, that I am not as other men,—yet he went not to his house justified.

CCVIII. The wicked unthankful. Rom. i. 21. When they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, &c.

2 Tim. iii. 2. Men shall be lovers of their own selves, &c. unthankful, unholy, &c.

CCIX. Praise must be frequent. Ps. xxxiv. 1. I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise shall be continually in my mouth.

xxxv. 28. My tongue shall speak of thy righteousness, and of thy praise all the day long.

Ps. Ixiii 4. I will bless thee while I live.

cxi. 1. I will praise the Lord with my whole heart. Ps. cxxxiii. 1. cxix. 164. Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.

calv. 2. Every day will I bless thee, and will praise thy name for ever and ever.

CCX. With sincerity. Ps. cxi. 1. I will praise the Lord with my whole heart.

1 Cor. xiv. 15. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding. Ps. xlvii. 7.

Eph. v. 19. Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord. Col. iii. 16. Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

CCXI. God prepareth his people for his praise,—or divine influences therein. Ps. li. 15. O Lord open thou my lips, and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

cxiii. 171. My lips shall utter praise when thou hast taught thy law to me.

Ver. 175. Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee.

Isa. xliii. 21. This people have I formed for myself, they shall shew forth my praise.

Ixi. 11. The Lord will cause righteousness, and praise to spring forth.

Jer. xiii. 11. I have caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel, and the whole house of Judah, saith the Lord, that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory, but they would not hear.

Jer. xxxiii. 8. I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, and will pardon all their iniquities whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.

Ver. 9. And it shall be to me for a name of joy and praise, and an honour before all nations of the earth. Ver. 11.
