PREFACE.

S in the preceding volumes of this edition, the text here given follows that of Berkeley's final revision, while the readings of the earlier issues are indicated in footnotes. Special interest can be claimed for this volume. It contains the first reprint of the "Querist" in its original parts; a slight but characteristic contribution to the "Dublin Journal," not included in any other edition; and an appendix of criticisms that may contain references of interest to many readers of Berkeley.

Professor Fraser-whose name no student of Berkeley can mention without gratitude-offered to read the proofs of Appendix C, and made several valuable additions. For this and for other kind help, the editor offers his sincere thanks. Acknowledgments are also due to Mr. J. J. Macsweeny, who, with Sir John Gilbert (now gone beyond the reach of thanks), gave every facility for research among the collections of the Royal Irish Academy. To him, readers are indebted in some measure for the reprint of the "Querist" and the curious title-page of the " Maxims."
