A most interesting collection, giving all the private and official accounts of the Nova Scotia and Accadia questions, the fishery in Canço bay, and all the disputed claims between the English and French with regard to the frontiers and border settlements in the West Indies. and near the line of the St. Laurence; and including the original commission issued in 1722 to Daniel Pulteney, and signed by George I, "George R" at the beginning and "GR at the end. Towards the middle of the volume (which is chiefly concerned with the years 1718-20, and which was evidently one of a series of books kept in the Colonial Office of the time) we come upon the copy of a letter from Laurence Vanden Bosh to Governor Nicholson of Maryland. It is dated from Sassifrix 19 October 1694, and has a large MS. map of the lower course and the mouths of the Mississippi. This is followed by five long pages of extracts from letters of Governor Nicholson, Governor Blake, and others, concerning a scheme to prevent the French from utilising the Mississippi. Another large map at the end of the book shows "Canço Harbour the eastmost land of Nova Scotia. By Capt. Young.' This was in connexion with the fishery dispute.-We find also ADDISON here, in his capacity of Secretary of State, receiving and answering letters on those questions.

AUSTRALIA, THE FIRST MAP OF AUSTRALIA, from Nicolas Vallard's Atlas, 1547, in the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps, chromolithographed in facsimile from the MS. original, on a sheet of paper 23 inches by 17

Privately issued for Sir Thomas Phillipps, 1856 2

The words "Terra Iaua" occur close to the long
coast which runs from 9 to 55 degrees of South Latitude.
It is known that the name Greater Java was applied by
the early navigators to the coasts of New Guinea and
Australia. The artist who decorated Vallard's map has
ornamented the interior of this land with figures such as
could only have been seen in Lesser Java; but he was
probably misled by the name Iaua.

BARTHOLOMEO DA LI SONNETTI [ZAM-
BERTO] (ISOLARIO), 4to. gothic letter, with 49
woodcut maps; citron morocco extra, gilt edges, by
C. Smith [sine nota, sed Venetiis, circa 1480] 24 0 0
"One of the rarest volumes of early Italian poetry,"

and at the same time, the earliest special Atlas of the
Mediterranean. The first five pages are occupied by a
metrical introduction. On the sixth a sonnet begins,
which is devoted to the Island of Cerigo, opposite to it is
given a woodcut map; then follow the sonnets on Crete,
Rhodes, etc., in due succession. The maps are simple
outlines, without any names of places. The subject of
the last sonnet is Cyprus, the concluding leaf being the
map of that island.

The present copy accords exactly with the description
given by Brunet. It consists of fifty-six leaves, without
either pagination or signatures. The author gives his
name on the fifth page thus-

"Per aprobar questa opereta fata
per me bartolomeo da li soneti

intendo de monstrar con veri effeti

quanto che londa egiea abia cerchatta

The first three lines are a dedication which contains an elaborate reduction of the sovereign's name to numerals. They run thus

Al Diuo Cinque cento cinque e diece

Tre cinque a do Mil nulla tre e do un cento
Nulla ..

Cinque cento D, cinque V, diece X; tre=3 or Z;
cinque V, a=A, do=ii, i.e. n or N, mil-M, nulla O,
tre Z, e E, do N, un-I, cento=C, nulla=0. The union
of those symbols makes the name DVX ZVAN
MOZENICO, i.e. the Doge who ruled from 1477 to
1485.
