of Gifts and Graces granted to it, as no meer Creature can poffibly be the Subject of, or adequately conceive. There is an extraordinary Fulnefs of the Spirit, in the most direct Way of Communication, immediately from the Godhead, to the Manhood in our Lord Jefus Chrift. An extraordinary Manifeftation and Declaration of this we have, Matth. iii. 16. And lo, the Heavens were opened unto him, and be faw the Spirit of God defcending like a Dove, and lighting upon him. This was an extraordinary Symbol, or Sign, of the Fulnefs of the Spirit, which was put upon him. Now this Fulnefs of the Spirit is communicated to Chrift as the Head of his Church, and fo with a Power to bestow the fame holy Spirit on all the Members of his myftical Body. The holy Spirit is in him as Life in the Head, Light in the Sun, living Waters in a Fountain, to be conveyed to others. Hence when Chrift was about to leave his Difciples, and afcend up to Heaven, he breathed on them, and faid to them, Receive ye the Holy Ghoft, Job. xx. 22. His breathing on them, was a Sign of the Communication of the Spirit to them, as proceeding from himself.

If therefore we defire the indwelling Prefence of the holy Spirit, and a Participation in his faving Gifts and Graces, Jefus Chrift can bestow them upon us. And therefore when Jefus Chrift called upon thofe that thirst, to come unto him and drink, Job. vii. 37. he immediately added a Promife of the Gift of the holy Spirit unto them, . 38, 39. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture bath faid, out of his Belly fhall flow Rivers of living Water: but thus be fpake of the Spirit, which they that believe on him fhould receive. They fhould receive those Gifts and Graces of the Spirit, which fhould not only refresh themselves, but be alfo improved to the refrething of others.

3. There is a Fulnefs of Satisfaction for Sin, in Jefus Chrift. The Lord Jefus Chrift undertook to fatisfy the Juftice of God for his People. To this End, he conYented to have their Iniquities laid upon him. Ifai. liii. 6. The Lord hath laid on him the Iniquities of us all. And

purfuant

pursuant hereunto, he underwent the Punishment due unto our Sins. 1 Cor. xv. 3. He died for our Sins. And by his Sufferings and Death, he gave full Satisfaction to the holy and offended God for our Sins. His Sacrifice for Sin, was fully fatisfactory to God, fo as that he demands no further Satisfaction for Sin, but is eternally contented therewith. Eph. v. 2. Who loved us and gave himself for us an Offering and Sacrifice to God, for aà fweet-fmelling Savour. God is perfectly and eternally well-pleafed therein. The fatisfying Vertue thereof abides for ever. For by that one Offering of himfelf, he bath perfected for ever them that are Janctified. Heb. x. 14. He need not repeat the offering of himself for that fingle Offering is fufficient to obtain perfect Acceptance with God, and fu!! Pardon of all Sin. If therefore we defire to have the Juftice of God fatisfied for our Sins, and Atonement to be made for them, we may find this in Jefus Chrift. Though we cannot answer for one of a thoufand of them, yet he has anfwered for them all. And accordingly we muft repair to his fatisfactory Sacrifice for Sin, and carry that to God, and plead that with God, and depend upon that for Reconciliation to God and Remiffion of Sin. This precious Blood of his, through Faith in it, will be the Propitiation for our Sins, and effectually cleanfe us from all Sin, Rom. iii. 25.1 Feb. i. 7.

4. There is a Fulnefs of Merit in Jefus Chrift. He has not only fatisfied for Sin, but also merited all Good. His Obedience to the Death for his People was truly meritorious. By his perfectly fulfilling the Law, and voluntarily undergoing the Punishment threatned, in their Place, he has purchafed all fpiritual and eternal, Bleffings for them. Hence they are faid to be bought with a Price, I Cor. vi. 20. And Chrift is faid to have obtained eternal Redemption for them, Heb. ix. 12. Such was the infinite Worthinefs of his Perfon and Perfor mances, as that he has properly merited Mercy, Peace, Grace and Glory for all them that are his. He has made a Purchafe of thefe Bleffings, by paying for them a Price

of

of full value, every Way worth them. If therefore we defire a meritorious Price, to obtain for us all the good Things of the kingdom of Grace and Glory, we may find it in Jefus Chrift. Though we have no perfonal Worthiness of our own, but are altogether unworthy of the least Mercy, yet in Jefus Chrift there is infinite Worthiness for us to plead with God. We may plead his Merits, and ask Bleffings for the Sake thereof, and that with as much Boldness and Confidence as if it were properly and perfonally our own. For he merited for us, and if we by Faith accept of and rest upon his Merits, they fhall be as effectual, and of as much Benefit to us, as if they were really our own. Yea, the meritorious Righteoufnefs of Jefus Chrift is imputed to all Believers, and God proceeds with them upon that Righteoufnefs, as if it were wrought out by themfelves. On the Account of this Righteoufnefs being upon them by Faith, they are pardoned, accepted, entitled unto, and fhall be poffeffed of eternal Life.

5. There is a Fulness of pardoning Mercy in Jefus Chrift. As he has made a full Purchase of Pardon for us, fo he has full Power to difpenfe the Pardon to us. He forgave Sin in the Days of his Humiliation here on Earth. Mark ii. 5. Jefus faid unto the fick of the Palfie, Son, thy Sins be forgiven thee. And when the Scribes thought in themselves that he was guilty of Blafphemy, in pretending to forgive Sin, which was God's fole Prerogative, he vindicated himself and afferted his Power to forgive Sin, . 10. That ye may know that the Son of Man hath Power on Earth to forgive Sins. So again, he faid unto many in an authoritative Way, Thy Sins are forgiven thee, Luk. vii. 48. Whereupon thofe that fat at Meat with bim, faid within themfelves, Who is this, that forgivetb Sins alfo ! v. 49. And as he thus forgave Sins in his State of Humiliation, fo likewife does he in his State of Exaltation. Acts v. 31. Him hath God exalted with bis right Hand, to be a Prince and a Saviour, to give Repentance to Ifrael, and Forgiveness of Sins. And hence Stephen prayed to our exalted Lord and Redeemer, that

be

be would not lay the Sin of his Murderers to their Charges i. e. that he would forgive their Sins, Acts vii. 60. If therefore we earnestly defire to have the Burden of Guilt removed from us, by a full Pardon of our Sins, we may have it from Jefus Chrift. For in him there is a Fulness of pardoning Grace and Mercy. Hence he invites fuch as labour and are heavy laden with a load of Guilt, to come to him, and he will give them Reft, ease them of their Burden, Matth. xi. 28.

6. There is a Fulnefs of Light in Jefus Chrift. He is the Fountain of all fpiritual Light. He is the Sun of Righteoufnefs, that fhines upon, and enlightens the dark World, Mal. iv. 2. All fpiritual, faving Light, is originally from him, comes down from him, into the dark Minds of Men. Job. i. 9. He is the true Light, which lighteth every Man that cometh into the World. From him Men receive the light of Reason or natural Knowledge, which they bring into the World with them. And from him alfo they receive the light of fupernatural and faving Knowledge. Joh. vii. 12. Then Spake Jefus again, Jaying, I am the light of the World: he that followeth me fhall not walk in Darkness, but fhall have the light of Life; he fhall have from Chrift that Light which fhall lead him to eternal Life. 'Tis he that opens the Eyes of the Blind, that enlightens the Minds of Sinners, that opens their Understandings to understand the Scriptures, and to difcern fpiritual and divine Things, Luk. xxiv. 45. If therefore we defire faving Knowledge, it is to be had from Jefus Chrift. He can give us fatisfying and glorious Difcoveries of the great Myfteries of the Gofpel. He can, by the illuminating Power of his holy Spirit, furnish with all Knowledge neceffary to the doing our Duty, and the obtaining eternal Salvation. 1 Joh. ii. 20. Te have an Unction from the holy One, and ye know all Things, i. e. All Things neceffary to fecure them from Seducers, and to guide them to Glory. He therefore calls us to come to him for Eye-falve that we may fee, Rev. iii. 18. i. e. for the Spirit of Illumination, that the Eye of our Mind may be enlightned,

to understand fpiritual Things, after a fpiritual Manner. Though our natural Capacity be never fo weak, yet he can make us knowing and wife unto Salvation.

7. There is a Fulness of affifting Grace in Jefus Chrift. There is in him a Sufficiency of all Power and Ability to enable us to the well performing of all Duties, and to the fuccessful refifting of all Temptation. As for the difcharge of all Duties, both in doing and fuffering, Jefus Chrift can fully ftrengthen us thereunto. Without him we can do nothing, as we ought to do it. Joh. xv. 5. But through Chrift strengthening of us we can do every Thing. Phil. iv. 13. I can do all Things, through Chrift who strengtheneth me. By the help of Chrift, Paul could do the moft difficult ties, and patiently bear the fharpeft Sufferings.---Again, through the Affiftance of Jefus Chrift we may overcome the strongeft Temptations of Satan. Though he aflault us never fo violently, yet if the Lord will ftand by us and ftrengthen us, we fhall get the Victory. Thus when the Apoftle was buffeted by Satan, our Lord promised him that his Grace fhould be fufficient for him. 2 Cor. xii. 9. The Lord faid unto me, My Grace is fufficient for thee for my Strength is made perfect in Weakness. And therefore he would glory in his Weaknefs, that the Power of Chrift might reft upon him: for when he was weak in himself, then he was ftrong in Chrift. If therefore we need and defire Strength, to do all the Duty required of us, and to repell all the Temptations wherewith we are followed, we may have it from Jefus Chrift. Though we are weak, yet he is ftrong; and through his Affiftance we fhall happily carry on all Duty, and break our Way through all Temptation. If we are strong in him and the Power of his Might, going to him, and humbly depending upon him for his Grace to help, none of his Commands fhall be grievous to us, nor fhall any of Satan's Temptations be too hard for us. Through the Strength of the Lord, we fhall hold on and hold out to the End. Ifai. xl. 29, 31. He giveth Power to the Faint, and to them that have un
