The Rigi railway-induced by the success of American mountain railways-was the pioneer mountain road in Europe. Its success and safety has led to an almost complete revolution of mountain travel in Switzerland; mountain railways now reaching, or in process of construction to, innumerable points of interest to the tourist.

Within the few past years mountain railways in Switzerland have been greatly extended. These roads are no part of any through route, but simply lines to some desirable point of view or some mountain hotel. The excursion can usually be made in a few hours. The views from the heights thus gained are among the most commanding and magnificent of the best Alpine scenery.
