And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. And it came to pass, as she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field and she lighted off her ass; and Caleb said unto 75 her, What wouldest thou? Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.

Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to 100 the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if the hill country Ephraim be too narrow for thee. And the children of Joseph said, The hill country is not enough for us and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who 105 are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only: but the hill country shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt 110 4 See Judges 1.8,21 (pp. 121, 122).

cut it down and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.

19.47. And the coast of the children of Dan went out too 115 little for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.

19.49. When they had made an end of dividing the land for in120 heritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them: according to the word of Jehovah they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.

Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him. And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand and

they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men. And they 10 found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites. But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes 15 cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou? And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give 35 me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

45 possessed 3 not Gaza with the coast thereof, nor Askelon with the coast thereof, nor Ekron with the coast thereof. And they gave 50 Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the 60 entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy. And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family. And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the 65 name thereof unto this day. Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in 70 that land.
