45 ings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

32.15. And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand : the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, 55 neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear. And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. And he 60 took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and

ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it. And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them? And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my 65 lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief. For they said unto me, Make us a god which shall go before us for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break 70 it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

32.30. And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin and now I will go up unto Jehovah; peradventure I shall make an atonement for 75 your sin. And Moses returned unto Jehovah, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin―; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against 80 me, him will I blot out of my book. Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them. And Jehovah plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

33.1. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Depart, and go up 85 hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it : and I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the 90 Hivite, and the Jebusite: unto a land flowing with milk and honey for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way. And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned and no man did put on him his ornaments. For Jehovah had said 95 unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people were I to go up in the midst of thee in a moment, I should consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee. And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount 100 Horeb.

33.7. And Moses used to take the tent and pitch it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the tent of meeting. And it came to pass, that every one which sought Jehovah went out unto the tent of meeting, which was without the camp. 105 And it came to pass, whenever Moses went out unto the tent, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tent. And it came to pass, as often as Moses entered into the tent, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tent, and 110 Jehovah talked with Moses. And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tent door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man at his tent door. And Jehovah used to speak unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant 115 Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the

tent.

34.1. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest. 120 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai. And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount. And he hewed G

125 two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as Jehovah had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. And Jehovah descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of Jehovah. And he said, 130 If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

34.27. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Write thou these 135 words for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel. And he was there with Jehovah forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

NOTE

At this point it is natural to devote a lesson to the tabernacle. But, as the chapters in Exodus (25 to 40) which refer to it are very long and not easy for boys to follow, most teachers prefer to explain it in their own way by word of mouth. Accordingly the chapters are not printed here.

THE QUAILS-THE SPIES

NUMBERS 10.29 to 14.45

10.29. And Moses said unto 1 Hobab, the son of Raguel the 2 Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which Jehovah said, I will give it you come thou with us, and we will do thee good for Jehovah hath spoken And he said unto him, I will not go;

but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred. And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes. And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness Jehovah shall do unto us, the same 10 will we do unto thee.

10.33. And they departed from the mount of Jehovah three days' journey: and the 3 ark of the covenant of Jehovah went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them. And it came to pass, when the 15 ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, Jehovah, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee. And when it rested, he said, Return, Jehovah, unto the many thousands of Israel. And the cloud of Jehovah was upon them by day, when they went out of the 20 camp.

11.1. And when the people complained, it displeased' Jehovah and Jehovah heard it; and his anger was kindled ; and the fire of Jehovah burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp. And the 25 people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto Jehovah, the fire was quenched. And he called the name of the place 4 Taberah: because the fire of Jehovah burnt among them.

11.4. And the mixed multitude that was among them fell 30 a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: but now our soul is dried away there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes. And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium. And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and boiled it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil. And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it. Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled greatly;

Moses also was displeased. And Moses said unto Jehovah, 45 Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me? Have I conceived all this people? have I brought them forth, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the 50 sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers? Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat. I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, 55 I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

11. 16. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them 60 unto the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with thee.

And I will come down and talk with thee there and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone. And say thou unto the people, 65 Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of Jehovah, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore Jehovah will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days; 70 but even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised Jehovah which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt? And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and 75 thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month. Shall the 5 flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them? And Jehovah said unto Moses, Is Jehovah's hand waxed short? thou shalt see now 80 whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not. And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel. And there went forth a wind from Jehovah, and brought quails from the 5 This question is ironical, and implies that they had no flocks nor herds.
