If yet for me Immanuel lives
To plead his potent prayer.

!: 2 Dispel then, Lord, these shades of night,
My sullen doubts remove;
O send a ray of heav'nly light,
And lead me to thy love.

222. The Saint's Delivery at Death.
THE Lord shall wipe away all tears
From ev'ry weeping eye;

TH

And pains, and groans, and griefs, and fears,
And death itself shall die.

2 How long, dear Saviour, O how long,
Shall this bright hour delay?
Fly swiftly round, ye wheels of time,
And bring the welcome day.

HE

223. The Saint's Safety in God.
E that has made his refuge God,
Shall find a most secure abode;
Shall walk all day beneath his shade,
And there at night shall rest his head.
Thrice happy man, thy Maker's care
Shall keep thee from the fowler's snare;
Satan the fowler, who betrays
Unguarded souls a thousand ways

3 What though a thousand at thy side,
At thy right hand a thousand dy'd,
Thy God his chosen peoplesaves
Amongst the dead, amidst the graves,

224. The Heart devoted to God.

I MY God, my King, thy various praise Shall fill the remnant of my days; Thy grace employ my humble tongue, Till death and glory raise the song. 2 The wings of ev'ry hour shall bear • Some thankful tribute to thine ear ;.

And ev'ry setting sun shall see
New works of duty done for thee.

3 But who can speak thy wond'rous deeds?
Thy greatness all our thoughts exceeds;
Vast and unsearchable thy ways,
Vast and immortal be thy praise.

225. The everlasting Covenant. I THY word, O God, supports my faith, From thence my hope doth spring;

Founded alone on what God saith,
My soul, adore and sing.

2 Thy word is truth, thy promise sure,
Hence faith and hope abide:
My soul in safety shall endure;
Nought can from Christ divide.

226. To the Trinity.

1 BLESS'D be the Father, and his love,

To whose celestial source we owe

Rivers of endless joy above,

And rills of comfort here below.

2. Glory to thee, great Son of God,
From whose dear wounded body rolls
A precious stream of vital blood,
Pardon and life for dying souls.
3 We give thee, sacred Spirit, praise,
Who in our hearts of sin and woe
Mak'st living springs of grace arise,
And into endless glory flow.

227. Comfort for Mourners.

THERE are the mourners, says the Lord,
That wait and tremble at my word?

That walk in darkness all the day?

Come, make my name your trust and stay.
The softest couch that nature knows,

Can give the conscience no repose:

Look to my righteousness and live;
Comfort and peace are mine to give.

228. Growth in Grace.

LORD, 'tis a pleasant thing to stand In gardens planted by thy hand : Let me within thy courts be seen, Like a a young cedar fresh and green. There grow thy saints in faith and love, Blest with thy influence from above; Time, that does all things else impair, Still makes them flourish strong and fair. 3 Laden with fruits of age, they shew The Lord is holy, just, and true: None that attend his gates shall find A God unfaithful, or unkind.

229. Free Grace.

1 WHY was I made to hear thy voice, And enter while there's room;

When thousands make a wretched choice,
And rather starve than come?

2 'Twas the same love that made the feast,
That sweetly forc'd us in;
Else we had still refus'd to taste,
And perish'd in our sin.

230. Completeness in Grace.

1 HADI ten thousand gifts beside, I'd cleave to Jesus crucify'd,

And build on him alone:

For no foundation is there, giv'n
On which I'd place my hopes of heav'
But Christ the corner-stone.

2 Possessing Christ, I all possess ;
Wisdom, and strength, and righteousness,
And sanctity complete:

Bold in his name I dare draw nigh,
Before the Ruler of the sky,
And all his justice meet.

231. Self-examination.

THY piercing eye, O God, surveys
The various windings of my ways;
Teach me their tendency to know,
And try the paths in which I go.
2 How wild, how crooked have they been!
A maze of foolishness and sin!
With all the light I vainly boast,
Leaving my guide, my soul is lost.
3 O turn me back to thee again!
Or I shall search my ways in vain:
Do thou the path of life reveal,
And lead me up to Zion's hill.

232. The Same.

1 HOW oft have sin and Satan strove To rend my soul from thee my

But everlasting is thy love,

God;

And Jesus seals it with his blood..
2 Amidst temptations sharp and long,
My soul to this dear refuge flies;
Hope is my anchor firm and strong,
While tempests blow, and billows rise.
3 The gospel bears my spirits up;
A faithful and unchanging God
Lays the foundation for my hope,
In oaths, and promises, and blood.

233.

Praise ye the Lord. 1 GLORY be to God on high,

God whose glory fills the sky;
Peace on earth to man forgiv'n,
Man, the well-belov'd of heav'p.

Hallelujah.

2 Sov'reign Father, heav'nly King, Hallelujak. Thee we now presume to sing; Glad thine attributes confess, Glorious all, and numberless. 3 Hail, by all thy works ador'd, Hail, the everlasting Lord;

Hallelujah.

Thee, with thankful hearts we prove,
Lord of pow'r, and God of love!

234. Faithfulness of God. 1 THIS God is the God we adore,

Our faithful unchangeable friend;
Whose love is as great as his pow'r,

And neither knows measure nor end.

2 'Tis Jesus, the first and the last,

[ocr errors]

Whose Spirit shall guide us safe home;
We'll praise him for all that is past,
And trust him for all that's to come.

235. A blessed Gospel.

1 BLEST are the souls that hear and know
The gospel's joyful sound;
Peace shall attend the path they go
And light their steps surround.
2 Their joy shall bear their spirits up,
Through their Redeemer's name ;
His righteousness exalts their hope,
Nor Satan dares condemn.

3 The Lord of glory and defence,
Strength aud salvation gives:
Israel, thy King for ever reigns,
Thy God for ever lives.

236. Human Weakness and Christ's Strength.

L

ET me but hear

my Saviour say,
"Strength shall be equal to thy day;"

Then I rejoice in deep distress,

Leaning on all-sufficient grace.
