2 This tongue, with blasphemies defil'd, i
These feet, to erring paths beguil'd,
In heav'nly league agree;

Who could believe such hips could praise,
Or think my dark and winding ways
Should ever lead to thee?.

3 These eyes, that once abus'd their sight,
Now lift to thee their wat'ry light,
And weep a silent flood;

These hands ascend in ceaseless pray'r;
O wash away the stains they wear,
In pure redeeming blood!

These ears, that pleas'd could entertain
The midnight oath, the lustful strain,
When round the festal board;
Now deaf to all th' inchanting noise,
Avoid the throng, detest the joys,.
Anda press to hear thy word.

5 Thus art thou serv'd in ev'ry part ; ~ €
O wouldst thou more transform my heart,
That drossy thing refine:

That grace might nature's strength controul, And a new creature body-soul,

Be, Lord, for ever thine!

135. The Believer's Hope.

A

HE is a God of sovʼreign love, *23
That promis'd heav'n to me;?

And taught my thoughts to soar above,
(Where happy spirits be.

2 Prepare me, Lord, for thy right hand;
Then come the joyful day!

Come death, and some celestial band,
To bear my soul away.

3 Then, my Beloved, take my soul
Up to thy blest abode;

That face to face I may behold"

My Saviour, and my God.

4 God has laid up in heav'n for me and
A crown which cannot fade;

The righteous Judge, at the great day,
Shall place it on my head.

5 Nor hath the King of grace decreed › ›
This prize for me alone;

But all that love and long to see
Th' appearance of his Son.

136. Human Depravity lamented. 1 ARISE, my tend rest thoughts, arise, To torrents melt my streaming eyes! And thou, my heart, with anguish feel Those evils which thou canst not heal! 2 See human nature sunk in shame!/ See scandals-pour'd on Jesus' name! The Father wounded thro' the Son! The world abus'd, the soul undone! 3 See the short course of vain delight & Closing in everlasting night!

In flames, that no abatement know,
The briny tears for ever flowne

4 My God, I feel the mournful scene; My bowels yearn o'er dying men ; { And fain my pity would reclaim,

And snatch the fire-brands from the flame!

5 But feeble my compassion proves,
And can but weep where most it loves;
Thine own all-saving arm employ, A
And turn those drops of grief to joy.

137. The Charge...

b.A Charge to keep I have,
A God to glorify;

A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky.

2 To serve the present age, T
My calling to fulfil;

may

it all my pow'rs engage,
To do my Master's will!
3 Arm me with jealous care,
As in thy sight to live;
And O! thy servant, Lord, prepare
A good account to give!

4 Help ine to watch and pray,
And on thyself rely:

And let me ne'er my trust betray,
Lest I for ever die..

138. Christ our Sacrifice.

[OT all the blood of beasts

NOT

On Jewish altars slain;

Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away one stain.

2 But Christ the heav'nly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;
A sacrifice of nobler name,
And richer blood than they.
3 My faith would lay its hand
On that dear head of thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.!

4 My soul looks back to see 911
The burdens thou didst bear
When hanging on the cursed tree,
And hopes her guilt was there. ' ¡

5 Believing we rejoice

To see the curse remove; 7.

We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,
And sing his bleeding love.

139. Rejoicing in Christ.

1 AWAKE and sing the song

Of Moses and the Lamb;

'Wake ev'ry heart and ev'ry tongue,
To praise the Saviour's name.

2 Sing of his dying love,
Sing of his rising pow'r, b
Sing how he intercedes above,^
For those whose sins he bore.
3 Sing till we feel our hearts

Ascending with our tongues,
Sing till the love of sin departs,
And grace inspires our songs.
4 Sing on your heav'nly way,
Ye ransom'd sinners sing;
Sing on, rejoicing ev'ry day,
In Christ th' eternal King.
5 Soon shall ye hear him say,

"Ye blessed children come;" Soon will he call you hence away, And take his wand'rers home.

140. Eben-ezer.

1 COME thou fount of ev'ry blessing! Tune my heart to sing thy grace! Streams of mercy never ceasing, pl Call for songs of loudest

praise Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above Praise the mount O fix me on it, Mount of God's unchanging love; 2 Here I raise mine Eben-ezer, Hither by thine help I'm come; And I hope by thy good pleasure!! Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger Wand'ring from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interpos'd with precious blood. 3 O! to grace how great a debtor, Daily I'm constrain'd to be! Let that grace, Lord, like a fetter; Bind my wand'ring heart to thee!

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love-
Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it;
Seal it from thy courts above!

The glory and light from above;

The King in his beauty display'd,
His beauty of holiest love:
With him I on Zion shall stand,
(For Jesus hath spoken the word,)
The breadth of Immanuel's land
Survey by the light of my Lord,
2 How happy the people that dwell
Secure in that city above!
No pain the inhabitants feel,

No sickness or sorrow shall prove:
Physician of souls, unto me
Forgiveness and holiness give,

And then from the body set free,
And then to the city receive.

142. Christ withdrawn.

O WHAT shall I do to retrieve
The love for a season bestow'd;,

'Tis better to die than to live

Exil'd from the presence of God:
With sorrow distracted and doubt,
With palpable horror opprest,
The city I wander about,

And seek my repose in his breast.
2 Ye watchmen of Israel, declare
If ye my beloved have see
And point to that heavenly fair,
Surpassing the children of men;
