This work differs from others on the same subject, by the greater variety and copiousness of its historical details, by its numerous illustrations both in Maps and Wood-cuts, and by its sectional divisions.

"The plan of this work is ingenious and original: the general elements of geographical science are first detailed in clear and simple language-the student is then instructed in the physical aspect of the globe, the system of its mountains, rivers, declivities, &c., the effects of these on climate, and the geographical distribution of animals: the political divisions of states are combined with the history of their formation and in order that each state may be viewed as a whole, the colonial dependencies, though in different parts of the globe, are treated as provinces of the ruling country, and classed under its name. This departure from the natural order gives the work unity as a system of political geography in connexion with history.
