SIMPKIN, MARSHALL, & CO., STATIONERS' HALL COURT,

S. W. THEAKSTON, SCARBOROUGH.

1843.

PREFACE.

The time has come when we must address our readers, and offer either our congratulations, or urge our complaints. The latter is never pleasant, we have happily most cause to indulge in the former. We have been aided and encouraged in our efforts. Brethren have not only cheered us with their approbation, but have enriched our pages with articles of great interest and value. Our aim, from the first, has been to make the Northern Baptist a useful and instructive miscellany, for our young people, and we indulge the hope that this has been accomplished, in some degree, by their aid. We have studiously avoided inserting any thing which would not either edify or instruct.

But still we have only partially accomplished the object we have ever had before us. We have felt that the limits of our publication have been too circumscribed to allow us to do all. Month after month, we have been forced to omit or contract what has been sent, and perhaps to the mortification of some active friends, to reject altogether. But what can we do? With only 16 pages, how can we insert any thing but what strictly belongs to us as a body? Some say enlarge and increase the price! We should like the former very well, if we could do it without the latter. To increase the price, we cannot at present, but we should

like to enlarge. But even this we cannot do without our friends. They can do it! We want no profits for ourWe have laboured without remuneration! Let them then only extend the sale, by obtaining new subscribers and we pledge ourselves to the improvement of the work. If each subscriber would introduce it to only a friend, our circulation might be doubled immediately.

As it is, we hope materially to improve the Northern Baptist. We shall give more intelligence in a condensed form. We shall gather it from all parts of the world, and thus make it the record of Baptist proceedings every where. If not monthly, yet frequently we hope to give Engravings, and we have the promise of Missionary Intelligence direct from the correspondence of the brethren.

Beyond this we will not go, our readers have proof of our desire to profit them; let them trust us for the future, and be assured that if they increase our ability we shall not be ungrateful.
