which the Lord would not pardon.— 2 Kings xxiv. 3, 4.

The murderer, rising with the light, killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.-Job xxiv. 14. Ps. x. 4. 8.

Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation.Ps. li. 14. 2 Sam. xi.

They sleep not except they have done some mischief: and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.-Prov. iv. 16, 17.

God hates him whose hands shed innocent blood.-Prov. vi. 16, 17. .

Will ye steal, murder, &c. and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name? -Jer. vii. 9, 10.

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood: therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish.-Hosea iv. 2, 3.

The mariners, when they were to cast out Jonah into the sea, prayed to God, That they might not perish for his life, and that God would not lay innocent blood to their charge. Jonah i. 14.

The chief priests and elders implicitly acknowledged their guilt of murdering Christ for that, when Judas had agreed with them for thirty pieces of silver to betray him, and being struck with remorse for his execrable villany, and bringing back the money, said, I have betrayed innocent blood; when they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. Then they afterward said, It is not lawful to put those pieces of silver into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.→→Matt. xxvii. 3-6.

Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, &c.-Matt. xv. 19. You are of your father the devil, &c. he was a murderer from the beginning. John viii. 44.

The barbarians thought that vengeance would not suffer a murderer to live. Acts xxviii. 3, 4.

The works of the flesh are, envyings, murders, &c. of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.-Gal. v. 19. 21.

Love one another: not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother: and wherefore slew he him? because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous, &c. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know, that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 1 John iii. 11, 12. 15.

Such who were dreadfully plagued, yet repented not of their murders, &c.-Rev. ix. 21.

All murderers, &c. shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.-Rev. xxi. 8.

Without are dogs, &c. murderers, &c.-Rev. xxii. 15.

CHAP. LX.

OF ADULTERIES.

ABRAHAM and Jacob, by the consent of their wives, went in unto their maidens, and had children by them.Gen. xvi. 1, &c. xxx. 1, &c.

Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent and took Sarah, Abraham's wife; but God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man for the woman which thou hast taken, for she is a man's wife but Abimelech had not come near her, &c. He said, in the innocency of my hands have I done this: and God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know, &c. therefore suffered I thee not to touch her; now therefore, restore the man his wife, &c. if not, know that thou shalt surely die.-Gen. xx. 2-7.

Abimelech saw Isaac sporting with Rebecca his wife, and Abimelech called Isaac and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidest thou, she is my sister? &c. What is this thou hast done unto us? One

of the people might lightly have lain with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife, shall surely be put to death. -Gen. xxvi. 8-11.

Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine.-Gen. xxxv. 22. xlix. 3, 4,

When Potiphar's wife tempted Joseph to have lain with her, he answered her, My master, &c. hath not kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? and it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not to her to lie by her, or to be with her, &c. she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me; and he left his garment in her hand, and fled and gat him out.-Gen. xxxix. 7-13.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.Exod. xx. 14.

The man that committeth adultery with another man's wife; even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and adulteress shall surely be put to death. Levit. xx. 10. xviii. 20. 22.

David's adultery with the wife of Uriah, and God's great displeasure against him for it.—2 Sam. xi. xii. The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me; and disguiseth his face. -Job xxiv. 15.

If my heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door; let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her: for this is a heinous crime, &c. It is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all my increase.-Job xxxi. 9-12.

By means of a whorish woman, a man is brought to a piece of bread, and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life. Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burnt? &c. so he that goeth in to his

neighbour's wife, whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent, &c. Whoso committeth adultery with a woman, lacketh understanding; he that doeth it, destroyeth his own soul; a wound and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man, therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.-Prov. vi. 26-29.32-35.

See the flattering and enticing words and language of an adulterous woman, whereby she deceived a foolish man.-Prov. vii. 7-21.

Such is the way of an adulterous woman, she eateth and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.-Prov. xxx. 20.

Will ye, &c. commit adultery, &c. and stand in this house before me? &c.-Jer. vii. 9, 10.

Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbour's wives, &c. I know, and am a witness, saith the Lord.-Jer. xxix. 23.

How shall I pardon thee for this? &c. When I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses. They were as fed horses in the morning every one neighed after his neighbour's wife. Shall I not visit for these things, saith the Lord; and shall not my soul be avenged of such a nation as this?— Jer. v. 7-9.

I have seen thy adulteries and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills, in the fields: woe unto thee, O Jerusalem, wilt thou not be made clean?-Jer. xiii. 27.

The Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because, &c. by swearing, &c. committing of adultery, they break out, &c. therefore shall the land mourn, &c.-Hosea iv. 1—3.

Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery; and whoso marrieth her which is put

away, doth commit adultery.-Matt. xix. 9. Mark x. 9-12. 19.

Let not the wife depart from her husband; but, and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband; and let not the husband put away his wife.-1 Cor. vii. 10, 11.

Be not deceived, neither fornicators, &c. nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, &c. shall inherit the kingdom of God.-1 Cor. vi. 9, 10.

The works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, &c. I tell you, that they which do such things, shall not inherit the kingdom of God.Gal. v. 19-21. Eph. v. 5, 6. iii. 5, 6.

Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust afer her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.-Matt. v. 28.

CHAP. LXI.

OF FORNICATION AND LASCIVIOUSNESS.

THE lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: but her end is bitter as wormwood, &c. remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house; lest, &c. thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed.-Prov. v. 3, 4. 8. 11.

Keep thee from the evil woman, and lust not after her beauty, &c. for

by means of a whorish woman, a man is brought to a piece of bread.-Prov. vi. 24-26.

I discerned, &c. a young man void of understanding, &c. and there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, &c. so she caught him and kissed him, and with an impudent face, and much flattering words, &c. forced him, and he went after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter.-Prov. vii. 7. 10. 13. 21, .22. ix. 13-15.

The mouth of a strange woman is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein.-Prov. xxii. 14. xxiii. 27, 28. Eccles. vii. 26.

Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. Prov. xxxi. 3.

God gave them over to a reprobate mind, &c. being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, &c.-Rom. i. 28, 29.

Let us walk honestly as in the day, not in chambering and wantonness, &c. Rom. xiii. 13.

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God? &c. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy. 1 Cor. iii. 16, 17. vi. 19, 20.

It is reported commonly, that there is fornication among you, &c. I wrote unto you not to company with fornicators, &c. If any man that is called a brother, be a fornicator, with such an one, no not to eat.-1 Cor. v. 1. 9.11.

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? be not deceived, neither fornicators, &c. now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord, &c. your bodies are the members of Christ: shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot ? God forbid: what? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? &c. flee fornication: every sin that a man doeth is without the body,

but he that committeth fornication imagination (or stubbornness) of mine sinneth against his own body.-1 Cor. heart, to add drunkenness to thirst: vi. 9, 10. 13. 15, 16. 18. x. 8. Eph. the Lord will not spare him; but v. 5, 6. then the anger of the Lord, and his jealousy, shall smoke against that man, &c.-Deut. xxix. 18-20.

If they cannot contain, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn.-1 Cor. vii. 9.

I fear, &c. my God will humble me among you: and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness, and fornication, and lasciviousness which they have committed.-2 Cor. xii. 20, 21.

The works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness.-Gal. v. 19.

But fornication and all uncleanness, &c. let it not be once named amongst you, as becometh saints, &c. because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience (or unbelief).—Eph. v. 3. 6.

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth, fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, &c. put away filthy communications out of your mouth.-Col. iii. 5. 8.

Whoremongers, &c. God will judge.

-Heb. xiii. 4.

But the, &c. and whoremongers, &c. shall have their part in the lake which burneth, &c.-Rev. xxi. 8.

CHAP. LXII.

OF DRUNKENNESS.

AND Noah drank of the wine, and was drunken, and he was uncovered within his tent.-Gen. ix. 21.

Lot's daughters made him drink wine, so that they lay with him, and he knew not when they lay down, nor when they rose.—Gen. xix. 32, &c.

This our son is a glutton and a drunkard: and all the men of his city shall stone him.-Deut. xxi. 20, 21.

Lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood; and it come to pass when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the

When David had called Uriah, he did eat and drink before him: and he made him drunk.-2 Sam. xi. 13.

When Elah was drinking himself drunk in the house of Arsa, Zimri smote him and killed him.-1 Kings xvi. 9, 10

Benhadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavillions, when Israel came and slew the Syrians.-1 Kings xx. 16. 19, 20.

And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, &c. and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king; and the drinking was according to law, none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure. Esth. i. 7, 8.

They that sat in the gate spake against me, and I was the song of the drunkards.-Ps. lxix. 12.

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whosoever is deceived thereby, is not wise.-Prov. xx. 1.

Be not amongst wine bibbers, amongst riotous eaters of flesh; for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty.-Prov. xxiii. 20, 21.

It is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes strong drink; lest they drink and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.-Prov. xxxi. 4, 5.

Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink, that continue until night, till wine inflame them, &c. Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink.—Isa. v. 11. 22.

The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard.—Isa. xxiv. 20.

They also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way the priests and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine: they are out of the way through strong drink, they err in vision; they stumble in judgment: for all tables are full of vomit and filthiness.-Isa. xxviii. 7, 8.

His watchmen are blind, &c. Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.-Isa. lvi. 10-12.

Awake, ye drunkards, and weep, and howl, all ye drinkers of wine; because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.-Joel i. 5.

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, &c. that drink wine in bowls.Amos vi. 1. 6.

While they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble full dry.-Nahum i. 10.

Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness. Hab. ii. 15.

If that evil servant shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken, the Lord of that servant shall come in a day, &c.—Matt. xxiv. 48–50. Luke

xii. 45.

Others mocking, said, These men are full of new wine. But Peter, &c. said, These are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.-Acts ii. 13-15.

I have written unto you not to keep company, &c. if any man that is called a brother, be, &c. a drunkard, or an extortioner, with such an one no not to eat.-1 Cor. v. 11.

CHAP. LXIII.

OF COVETOUSNESS.

THOU shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, &c. nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.-Exod. xx. 17.

Balaam, for profit, would have cursed Israel.-Numb. xxii.

Achan's covetous desire of the silver, and wedge of gold, and Babylonish garment, gave Israel trouble, and brought ruin upon himself, his children, and his substance.-Josh. vii. 5. 18-20. 24, 25.

The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich, &c.-1 Sam. ii. 7, 8.

Ahab's covetousness of Naboth's vineyard, troubled Ahab, caused Naboth's murder, and Ahab's destruction.-1 Kings xxi. 1-4. xxii.

Gehazi's covetousness of Naaman's gifts, procured the leprosy upon himself.-2 Kings v. 20-22. 27.

Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.Ps. cxix. 36.

He that is greedy of gain, troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.-Prov. xv. 27.

Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me; lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord?Prov. xxx. 8, 9.
