respect how different will it be. They were parted from Him when He went up, and had to turn from that glorious sight to a life of sorrow and conflict; when He comes again it is to receive His people to Himself, that where He is there they may be also forever. "Unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation."2 Oh, then, let us be of the number of them that look for Him. When He comes again, then shall we know what salvation means; and how complete a salvation He has accomplished for us, when every trace of the ruin of the fall shall be swept away, as the apostle says, "We know that when he shall appear we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."3

3.

He took our fallen nature
All ruined and undone ;

And now redeemed He takes it

Unto His Father's throne.

4.

Behold the King of glory,
Whom heavenly hosts adore,
And yet the Son of Mary,
Our brother evermore.

5.

We may not know the welcome
That greeteth Him on high,
Nor hear the shout in heaven
Announce His victory.

6.

But this we know most surely,

As man He enters there ;

God hath recalled His banished one

And made him Lord and Heir.

Repentance and Remission of Sins Preached First in Jerusalem.

ACTS ii. 22-24, 32, 33, 36-41.-" Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know. Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. Therefore let all the

house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the Apostles, Men and brethren what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."

OUR Lord had said to His disciples before He was taken up into heaven," Behold I send the promise of my Father upon you, but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high." And in obedience to this command, they remained in Jerusalem, continuing in prayer and supplication, while they awaited the promise. How earnest must have been their prayers, how anxious their expectation during these days of waiting. At length when the day of Pentecost was fully come, we are told at the beginning of this chapter, how "they

were all with one accord in one place," when suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, filling all the house where they were sitting;" and how tongues of fire were seen resting upon each of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. A thing so extraordinary soon drew a crowd together, who in amazement said one to another, what meaneth this? Among that multitude which came together when this thing was noised abroad, were devout Jews from many different nations, who were then dwelling at Jerusalem, and they were filled with amazement when they found that these men, who were simple Galileans, were speaking in the tongues of those strange lands in which they were born, saying, "We do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God;" "others mocking said, these men are full of new wine.”

This was a solemn moment, a moment most trying, and putting to proof the spirits of men. God the Holy Ghost had come to dwell in the Church as He had never dwelt among men before. He manifests His presence, the presence of God, in another way than men would expect. The devout, the lowly in spirit, shall be taught God's way, they shall not stumble nor be offended,
