to the heart-searching truths, But he looked stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord. And they cast him out of the city, and stoned him and Stephen called upon God, saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. PHILIP AND THE EUNUCH.

Thus taught each sacred truth to feel,
Is thence inspired with holy zeal;
In Christ the Son of God believes
And the baptismal rite receives.

THE enemies of the gospel having cruelly stoned Stephen, a great persecution arose, by which the disciples were dispersed, "and went every where preaching the word," (Acts viii. 4.) so God turned the curse into a blessing, and brought good out of evil. "Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them," by which many were converted; "and there was great joy in that city." What a unspeakable blessing is it when the glad tidings of the gospel are introduced into a place where darkness and sin have long reigned!

gel of the Lord bid him arise and go toward the south, unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. This order Philip obeyed, and met an eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who had been to Jerusalem to worship, and was sitting in his chariot reading Esaias the prophet, which relates to the sufferings of Christ. On Philip joining the chariot, he inquired of the eunuch if he understood what he was reading? to which he replied, "How can I, except some man should guide me ? and he desired Philip to come up and sit with him," which he did, and preached unto him Jesus. The passage he was reading was this: "He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearers, so opened he not his mouth." Thus we learn that the 53d chapter of.
