Is it not evident they were the Bread and Wine, which they firft dedicated up on the Altar, and then by proper, and folemn Invocations, and Prayers confecrated into the myfti cal, or facramental Body, and Blood of Chrift ? Thefe Creatures of Bread and Wine, thefe external material Symbols of the feparate Body, and Blood of Chrift, that were crucified, and fhed upon the Crofs, were the Matter of their folemn Oblation, as is plain enough from thefe Citations, and fhall (God willing) be made ftill more plain from the Offices of the Church. Bishop Andrews understood them to be the Matter of this Chriftian Sacrifice as may be seen by this Prayer in his Greek and Latin Devotions."

I had not perhaps cited this Paffage, but to obviate a Reflection the Doctor hath made upon one of the most eminent and venerable Gentlemen of his Time, and moft eminent Writer of Devotions, whofe Books have been received in fo many Editions, for which he hath had the Thanks, and Prayers of the generality of the Clergy and Laity, I mean Mr. Nelfon, against whom he directs thefe Words in the Preface of his Anfwer: But to bring thefe Notions into Books of Devotion, as a certain ingenious Gentleman bath lately done, is ftill a grea ter Sign of their Zeal in this matter. This is faid by him after charging us with a Zeal to propagate new Notions plainly contrary to the Declarations of the Church of England, and to give Occafion, and Advantage to the Popish Miffioners of perverting our People, which does not feem (faith he) to fignify, they have any great Concern for the Church of England.

This abfurd, impertinent, and ill-natur'd Reflexion almost provokes me to ask our Reverend Adverfary, how the Supervisor of his Book and he have ftudied, and where they were bred? As for the former know he was bred in the Univerfity at a time, when neither true human, nor divine Learning was taught, or flourished there. Then there were neither Church, nor Prieft, nor Altar, nor Sacrifice in the Place, but among a few of the faithful Remnant, who wor hipped God in private. Bishop and Priest, and Altar, and Sacrifice were then Terms of Abomination there, when Students of Divinity began with Wollebius, and proceeded no higher than to Calvin, and fuch Writers; and though it might be eafy at the Reftauration for fome Men fo educated, yet it was more difficult for others to get free of the Errors, and Prejudices with which they were firft feafoned, and from this unhappy Time and fort of Education, and prepofterous Method of Study, in which the

Doctor glories, it hath proceeded in a great meafure, that we have, and have had fo many among the Clergy, that were never perfect, upright, and orthodox in fome Doctrines, especially in thofe relating to the Conftitution, Priefthood, and Service of the Chriftian Church. But doth not the Doctor know, that the Notion of the Chriftian Sacrifice, or Oblation to which he hath fuch an Averfion, was always not only in the Books, but in the Offices of the Holy Eucharift before the Reformation? I will but prefent him with one out of the Apoftolical Conftitutions, Lib. VIII. cap. xii. and leave it to his Confideration. In this Chapter among the Directions for adminiftring this Sacrament, we read that the Catechumens and Audients, &c. having gone out of the Church, the Deacon began the Office of the Holy Eucharift with that general Admonition, M τις κατά τινα. Μή τις εν αποκρίσει, Let none that is not in Charity, let no Hypocrite come bither. After pronouncing thefe Admonitions he faid : ορθοί προς κύριον και φόβο, και τρόμα ἐσῶτες ώμία προσφέρειν, in Sincerity towards our Lord, let us ftanding offer with fear, and trembling. Which being done (faith the Rubrick, for fo I call the Direction) Οι Διάκονοι προσαγέτου τα Δῶρα τις ἐπισκόπῳ πρὸς τὸ θυσιαςήριον, Let the Deacons bring the Offerings unto the Altar to the Bishop. Then the Bishop ftanding in his Prieftly Robes before the Altar began the Sacramental Office with this Bleffing: The Grace of Almighty God, and the Love of our Lord Fefus Chrift, and the Communication of the Holy Spirit be with you all. To which the People anfwered, and with thy Spirit. Then the Bishop: Lift up your Hearts, to which the People, we lift them up unto the Lord. Then the Bifhop: Let us give Thanks unto our Lord. To
