Orphans in their sadness:

But He sent the HOLY GHOST

Bringing joy and gladness:
At the Hour of Tierce, the LORD

Mended their affliction,

On the Day of Pentecost

With His Benediction.

Antiphon. O come hither: and behold the works of the LORD.

Psalm xlvi.

I God is our hope and strength : a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore will we not fear, though the earth

be moved : and though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea.

3 Though the waters thereof rage and swell : and though the mountains shake at the tempest of the same.

4 The rivers of the flood thereof shall make glad the city of God: the holy place of the tabernacle of the most Highest.

5 God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed God shall help her, and that right early.

6 The heathen make much ado, and the kingdoms are moved but God hath shewed his voice,

and the earth shall melt away.

7 The Lord of hosts is with us the God of Jacob is our refuge.

8 O come hither, and behold the works of the Lord what destruction he hath brought upon the earth.

:

9 He maketh wars to cease in all the world he breaketh the bow, and knappeth the spear in sunder, and burneth the chariots in the fire.

10 Be still, then, and know that I am God : I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be exalted in the earth.

II The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Glory be to the FATHER, &c.

V. And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven. Alleluia, Alleluia.

B. As of a rushing vehement wind. Alleluia, Alleluia.

The Collect.

O GOD the HOLY GHOST, Who didst descend upon the Apostles in the likeness of fiery tongues on the Feast of Pentecost: coming not without a mystery on the tenth day after the Ascension, but thereby manifesting Thy will that the tenth piece of silver, lost man, should be found: kindle in me the fire of Thy love: be Thou in the midst of me, that I may not be removed: do Thou help me, and that right early: do Thou of Thy goodness prepare me for the poor: so that being Thy servant, I may be also theirs, and may merit to be exalted hereafter, with Lazarus, into Abraham's bosom: who livest and reignest, with the FATHER and the SON, GOD to all ages of ages. Amen.

V. The Virtue of the Paraclete defend us from all evil.

The Hymn.

They received the SPIRIT'S love,
And the Graces Seven,

Which are wont to guide the soul
Up from earth to Heaven:
In His strength they thus went forth
Sin and demons shaming,

And the Catholic Belief

Everywhere proclaiming.

Antiphon. Their sound is gone out into all lands : and their words unto the ends of the world.

Psalm xix.

I The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

:

2 One day telleth another and one night certifieth another.

3 There is neither speech nor language: but their voices are heard among them.

4 Their sound is gone out into all lands: and their words into the ends of the world.

5 In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun : which cometh forth as a bridegroom out of his

chamber, and rejoiceth as a giant to run his

course.

6 It goeth forth from the uttermost part of the heaven, and runneth about unto the end of it again and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

7 The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple.

8 The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart the commandment of the Lord is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes.

9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endureth for ever the judgments of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold : sweeter also than honey, and the honey-comb.

II Moreover, by them is thy servant taught : and in keeping of them there is great reward.

12 Who can tell how oft he offendeth : O cleanse thou me from my secret faults.

13 Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great offence.

14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart : be alway acceptable in thy sight. 15 O Lord my strength, and my Redeemer. Glory be to the FATHER, &C.
