9. O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth. SECOND MORNING. Morning Prayer. PSALM IX. This Pfalm was probably composed by David on occafion of fome victories which he gained over the neighbouring nations, after God had exalted him to be King in Sion; for in v. xi. Sion is mentioned as being now in the bands of Ifrael, 1. I WILL praise thee O Lord, with my whole heart; I will fhew forth all thy marvellous works. 2. I will be glad and rejoice in thee, I will fing unto thy name, O thou most high. 3. For mine enemies were turned back, they fell and perished at thy prefence. 4. Verily thou didst maintain my right and my caufe; thou didst fit on the throne, judging right. 5. Thou didst rebuke the heathen, and destroy the wicked, and haft blotted out their name for ever and ever. 6. The defolations of the enemy were brought to a perpetual end; their cities thou didst destroy, even their memorial is perished. 7. But the Lord fhall reign for ever; he hath prepared his throne for judgment. 8. And he shall judge the world in righteoufness, in uprightness shall he minifter judgment unto the people. 9. The Lord alfo will be a refuge for the oppreffed; a refuge in times of trouble. 10. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee; for thou Lord haft not forfaken them that feek thee. 11. Sing ye unto the Lord, who dwelleth in Sion; declare his doings among the people. 12. For he that maketh inquifition for blood, remembereth them, he forgetteth not the cry of the humble : 13. "Have mercy upon me, O Lord, confider my trouble, which I fuffer of them that hate me, "thou that lifteft me up from the gates of death: 66 14. "That I may fhew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughters of Sion; that I may rejoice in thy falvation.” 15. The nations are funk down in the pit that they made; in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. 16. The Lord is made known; he hath executed judgment; the wicked was fnared in the work of his own hands. 17. The wicked fhall return to the grave; and all the nations that forget God. 18. For the needy fhall not always be forgotten; the hope of the afflicted fhall not perifh for ever. 19. Arife, O Lord, let not man prevail; let the heathen be judged in thy fight. 20. Put them in fear, O Lord, that the nations may know themselves to be but men. PSALM X. A defcription of the infolence of wicked men, when in power and authority. 1. WHY ftandeft thou afar off, O Lord; why hideft thou thyself in needful times of trouble? 2. By the pride of the wicked the poor are perfecuted; they are taken in the crafty wilinefs that they have imagined. 3. For the wicked boafteth of his hearts defire; and the needy of gain bleffeth himself. 4. The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, contemneth the Lord," God enquireth not," "he "is not," are all his thoughts. 5. His ways always profper, thy judgments are far from him; as for all his enemies, he breathes fury againft them. 6. He hath faid in his heart, I fhall not be moved; I shall never be in adverfity. 7. His mouth is full of curfing, deceit, and fraud; under his tongue is mischief and vanity. 8. He fitteth in the lurking places of the villages ; in fecret places doth he murder the innocent; his eyes are privily fet against the poor. 9. He lieth in wait, fecretly as a lion in his den; he lieth in wait to spoil the poor. 10. He doth spoil the poor, when he draweth him into his net; he stoopeth down and croucheth; and even a multitude of the poor falleth. II. He faith in his heart, " God hath forgotten, " he hideth his face, he will never fee it." 12. Arife O Lord, O God lift up thine hand; forget not the humble. . 13. Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, thou wilt not enquire. 14. Surely thou feeft; for thou beholdest mischief and fpight to requite it with thine hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee, thou art the helper of the fatherlefs. 15. Break thou the power of the wicked; and as for the evil man, fearch out his wickedness, until thou fhalt find none. 16. The Lord is king for ever and ever; the nations shall perish out of his land. 17. Lord, thou heareft the desire of the humble; thou wilt uphold their heart, thou wilt incline thine ear. 18. To help the fatherless and poor unto their right, that the men of the earth be no more exalted against them. PSALM XI. Written under the perfecution of David by Saul. 1. IN the Lord put I my trust, how say ye then to my foul, "flee as a bird to the mountain. 2. "For lo, the wicked bend their bow, they "make ready their arrow upon the string, that "they may privily fhoot at the upright in heart." 3. Surely their crafty defigns fhall be destroyed, for what hath the righteous done? 4. The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven; his eyeş behold the poor; his eyelids prove the children of men. 5. The Lord proveth the righteous; but the wicked and him that loveth violence, his foul hateth. |
