82 The angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about

pl

them.-LUKE ii. 9.

ALM on the listening ear of night

CALM

Come heaven's melodious strains,

Where wild Judæa stretches far

Her silver-mantled plains;
Celestial choirs from courts above

Shed sacred glories there;

And angels with their sparkling lyres
Make music on the air.

2 The answering hills of Palestine
Send back the glad reply,

And greet from all their holy heights

The Dayspring from on high:
O'er the blue depths of Galilee

There comes a holier calm;

And Sharon waves, in solemn praise,
Her silent groves of palm.

cr 3 'Glory to God!' The lofty strain

The realm of ether fills;

How sweeps the song of solemn joy
O'er Judah's sacred hills!

Glory to God in the highest.-LUKE ii. 11.

came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold: 'Peace on the earth, good-will to men, From heaven's all-gracious King!' pprit The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing.

p 2 Still through the cloven skies they come, With peaceful wings unfurled,

And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world;
Above its sad and lonely plains
They bend on heavenly wing,
pp rit And ever o'er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.

mf 3 Yet, with the woes of sin and strife,
The world has suffered long;
Beneath the angels' strain have rolled
Two thousand years of wrong;
