forth of the fpirit, is now as much forgot, as to any sense of real prefence, indwelling, vital operation, and of joy, peace and juftification in this comforter, as if it was intended only for Pentecofte, and not for all in any nation who should ask, seek, and knock for this glorious grace. The sanctifying of water to the mystical washing of fin is a strange doctrine; and has made ten thousands forget, whether there be any holy fpirit; except among the prattling and babbling of the bold predeftinarians, who know not the fire of the Lord, but are well acquainted with that beaft John faw coming up out of the earth: he had two horns like a lamb, and he fpake as a dragon. So has the falfe notion of predeftination appeared from Austin to this day; and has occafioned as much pride, envy, wrath, hatred, persecution and turbulence in church and state, as might be expected to flow from such ignorance and prefumption in the furious patrons and noisy demagogues of this deceivableness of unrighteoufness, and of fatan's putting on the horns of the lamb, while his names

We ought not to wonder that the imperfection of our nature will not permit us to discover how the perfection of his nature is the reafon of his exifting fo and no otherwife with refpect to space, no more than that it will not admit of a discovery of the reason, why his effential properties are fo and no otherwife with regard to number.

Abaddon and Apollyon, the deftroyer, liar and murderer fhew the dragon, when he speaks of God, and Chrift. Rev. xiii. 11, 17.

Secondly, when the sense of this root fignifies gnereb, evening, it is not as Parkhurft ingeniously fuppofes, because darkness mingles with light; for the firft abforbs the emanations into its hidden womb, (typed by the North under the law and the prophets) and cafts them forth again in the morning, typed by the Eaft in the temple, and is in full ftrength at the South; and from that gate or point, it travels to the Weft, where the waters begin to appear, and move on to the North. In this conftant circulation, and evolution of the four elements, the four visible wheels of the Cherubim in every world, by an incomprehenfible attraction. to their firft root and centre; and then by an expansion, and projection, amazingly great and extenfive, are all things dependent on the evening and morning. Thefe centripetal, and centrifugal powers exift in all beings, from the fun down to the worm, in different proportions, as the light or fire is diftributed in various measures. These are what our Bacon somewhere calls parellela fignacula ; and they are the fame truths which the Hebrews mean, when they fay, God fet his feal of fephiroth fo hard, that he printed it through the three worlds. Their fenfe is, that the ideas and forms of the archetypal world (their Aziluth or world of emanations)

emanations) have a faint fhadow or fimilitude in this lowest world of Afia. And without allowing this fentiment, how could any figure be given of heavenly things? if darkness, light, air, water and earth, bore no kind of analogy or proportion, the whole miniftry of the temple, in water, blood, in fire, in lights, and in clouds, could not have been fhadows, as Paul fays they are, and our Lord tells us, not one jota of the law fhall be left unfinished: and these were the moft eminent and nobleft branches of the law. This doctrine is confirmed in all the correspondences, or antitypes, in the daily fervice of the temple, in the fabbatical year, and in every tract published by me, for twenty years paft. To return. Darkness, light and spirit are one in God; and the likenefs of them must be generated in every fon of God, according to the truth in him. And, when Chrift, (the repairer of the breaches and of all the ruptures that fin has brought

As I think with Colliber, that Spinoza by attempting to prove that every thing is God, has in effect denied that there is any God at all: fo Dr. Priefly on Spirit and matter, has confounded the two oppofites of male and female: the first being spirit, and the last matter, the bride to the firft, her head. This doctrine Mofes taught in the two holy places; the first, where the feven fpirits or lights on one candlestick were always burning, was called Bathsbeba, and the inmost the male; and both together one heavenly Adam. brought forth) was offered up between the evenings on the fixth day as the true pafchal lamb, the powers of darkness, in that hour, were to prove him by pains and fufferings in the flesh, with all the Atrength of the northern horn, the conftringent cold, (for fatan has loft his fouth, the principle of light, by the breach of his Cherub, as Ezekiel fhews him under the type of the king of Tyre, clothed with eleven stones of fire only, in chap. xxviii. 12, 19.) they compressed him, till he fweat as it were drops of blood, and attempted to divide him from the higher centres of Abraham, and Ifaac; but he broke their chain, and the horn of the prince of darkness. And when he hung on the cross, in his laft cry, or pang he brought forth Benjamin, where Rachel finishes the divine births, and her womb is fhut, for the twelfth fon, or twelfth ftone for the twelve children of the new Jerufalem, concluded

jecting the christian plan of falvation; and the Socinians have affifted by fuppofing man by the tranfgreffion to be in no great manner changed. But unless the law, the prophets, and the gof pel mean nothing; he is changed to the beast as to his body; and the most miferable flave of the animal creation. The mercy of God, however, is here difplayed, that he may feel his burden, and miferies in constant fucceffion; be humbled to a sense of errors, fins and tranfgreffions, and return like the prodigal, the image of Self-will and felf-deftruction, to his father's house, and a better garment, and permanent bleffings; for felf, the first ferpent, is mortified and changed into implicit obedience.

the pangs of the fpiritual generation. For the whole Adam, according to the image of the invifible God, from Abraham to Benjamin, was offered up in Jefus Chrift: as they were all contained in the garments of the high priest from the two precious ftones on the fhoulders; on which Maimonides and other Hebrew authors tell us, were written the names of the three fathers; and on the breaft-plate, the names of the twelve fons on twelve ftones; and on the foreheadupon the golden plate, was engraven Kodefh La-Jehovah, holiness to Jehovah, or it be translated the holiness of Jehovah, as well because Jehovah was united, or became the head of this fon, as also because from that part downward, the high-priest was the righteous Adam, in the fulness of the godhead communicated to this beloved fon, anointed above other Gods. Thirdly, where this word denotes the weft, or western parts, fo tranflated by the feptuagint, where the light, fpirit, and waters, (never feparated in the divine world, being children of one bed) defcend from this point or corner, with respect to the temple, and its pofition, called the Weft, and the fea, towards the north, the darkness or fecret place of God's treasures, Ifa. xlv. 3.
