CYRUS YRUS ne fut pas plutôt arrivé en Crete, qu'il fe háta d'aller à Gnoflus, capitale de cette Ifle, où l'on admire le fameux Labyrinthe de Dédale, & le superhe Temple de Jupiter Olympien. Ce Dieu y eft représenté fans oreilles, pour marquer que le fouverain Maître de l'Univers n'a pas befoin d'organes corporels, pour entendre les plaintes & les prieres des humains (a). Dans une grande enceinte, au milieu d'un bois facré, s'éleve un magnifique bâtiment. On entre d'abord par un portique de vingt colonnes de Granite oriental. La porte eft de bronze d'une riche fculpture. Deux grandes figures ornent le portail, l'une repréfente la Vérité, Lautre la Juftice. L'intérieur eft une voûte immenfe, éclairée feulement par le haut, pour dérober à la vue tous les objets du dehors, excepté celui du ciel. Le dedans du Temple eft un Périftile de Porphyre, & de marbre Numide. L'on y voit de diftance en diftance plufieurs autels confacrés aux Dieux celeftes, & les ftatues des Divinités terreftres s'élevent entre chaque colonne. Le dôme eft couvert de lames d'argent, & le dedans de ce dóme eft orné des fimulacres des Héros qui ont mérité l'Apothéose, Cyrus entre dans ce Temple. Le filence & la majefié du lieu le rempliffent de crainte & de refpea (2) Plut. de Ifid. & Ofirid. THE TRAVELS O F CYRU S. BOOK V I. CYRUS no fooner arriv'd in Crete, but he went to Gnofus, the capital of that Ifland, where he faw the famous Labyrinth made by Daedalus, and the magnificent Temple of Jupiter Olympius. The Cretans reprefented that God without ears, to denote that the fovereign Lord of the Univerfe has no need of bodily organs to hear the Complaints & prayers of men (a). This noble building stood within a large enclofure, in the midst of a facred wood. The entrance into it was through a Portico of twenty pillars of oriental Grenate. The gate was of brass, finely carv'd. Two large figures adorn'd the portal, the one reprefenting Truth, the other Justice. The Temple was an immenfe arch where the light was let in only from above,in order to hide from the eye all objects abroad, except the Heavens. The infide was a periftile of Porphyry & Numidian marble. 2 At certam diftances one from another, were feveral altars confecrated to the celeftial Gods with the ftatues of terreftial Divinities between the pillars. The dome was cover'd on the outfide with plates of filver, & adorn'd on the infide with the images of Heroes who had been deify'd for their merit. Cyrus enters this Temple.
