INTRODUCTORY.

N the selection of Books for the HOLBROOK PUBLIC LIBRARY,

IN

the Trustees have endeavored to carry out the wishes of its generous founder. The collection embraces Histories, Biographies, Travels, the Sciences, Classics, Dictionaries of various European languages, a large number of works on Entertaining Knowledge, Poetry, Novels, Romances, and books in every department of literature, to satisfy the widest range of taste, of readers in every rank and station.

The Trustees have endeavored to make the Catalogue as complete as possible, and they have adopted what in their judgment were the best points in such other catalogues as came under their notice.

The Library will be conducted mainly on the plan of the Boston and other first-class Libraries, with some slight modifications, to meet the requirements of a smaller community.

While our Library contains upwards of two thousand volumes, it is intended to continually add to its shelves such new Books issued from time to time, as may be deemed worthy of purchase, and of general interest.

In the Reading Room will be found six daily newspapers, besides the most popular weeklies, and a very full list of magazines.

We acknowledge our indebtedness to the Boston, Brookline and Newton Public Libraries, for catalogues and valuable advice.

The Trustees are happy in being permitted to print the very interesting biography of our munificent founder, written by Rev. EZEKIEL RUSSELL, D. D., who has been intimately connected with the family of the late Mr. HOLBROOK, for many years. It will be properly appreciated by our citizens, as an honest tribute to the memory of a noble and generous-hearted man, whose crowning act of liberality, in the gift to our town of a PUBLIC LIBRARY, will merit the gratitude of every citizen of Holbrook.
