INTRODUCTION.

THE object of this volume is to present the Five Books of Moses, together with those portions from the other parts of the Bible, called in Hebrew "Haphtarahs" (i.e., Sections), in a form especially adapted to the use of Jewish children.

It is evident that the entire Bible cannot, for various reasons, be placed in the hands of very young persons. Our literature, indeed, already includes several works intended to supply the want caused by this fact; but they are better suited for the purpose of religious instruction on week-days than for reading in the Synagogue or during home worship, inasmuch as, though they treat of Scripture subjects, they do not preserve the form and language of the Bible itself. In the present volume, on the contrary, the language of the Bible has been retained throughout, except in such cases where, omissions having been necessary, a few words have been added to complete the connexion. All portions unsuitable for the young, as well as those containing merely lists of names, &c., have been omitted, and chapters from the historical parts of the Bible have been substituted for them as "Additional Readings."
