An Additional NOTE to Page 66.

HAT the two Sacraments are federal Rites, that they are Seals of the Gofpel-Covenant, one for initiating, and the other for renewing the said Covenant, is what I often affert, as known and current Doctrine, building in a great Measure my Argument upon it, for the reciprocal Communion between God and Man, (of Bleffings on one Part, and Duty on the other) in the Sacraments. But because fome perhaps may doubt of this main Principle, or may wish to see upon what Scripture-Grounds it ftands, I fhall here briefly fhew it firft of Baptifm, and next of the Eucharift.

IN

Of BAPTISM.

N Baptifm, the Cafe is plain, and needs but few Words. Baptifm fucceeds in the Room of Circumcision, and is ftiled the Chriftian Circumcifion by St. Paul himself. * Circumcifion, as all allow, was a federal Rite among the Jews, and is called the Covenant, † and Token of the Covenant, and a Seal of the Righteousness of Faith. Therefore Baptifm, fucceeding thereto, is a federal Rite, is entring into Covenant with God. Of * Colof.i. 11,12. See Dr. Wali's Hift. of Infant-Baptism, Part i. Ch. ii. p. 11. And Defence, p. 37. 269.

A

Of the EUCHARIST.

S to the Eucharift, that may be proved to be a federal Rite, or another Method of covenanting, from several Topicks, as follows,

1. THE Terms or Phrases of the Inftitution itself, are mostly federal Terms or Phrafes. Τῦτο γὰρ ἐσι τὸ αἷμα, τὸ τῆς καινῆς διαθήκης, τὸ περὶ πολλῶν ἐκχυνόμενον εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν. For this [Cup] is my Blood, the [Blood] of the New Covenant, which is fhed for many for the Remiffion of Sins. Matthxxvi. 28. Mark xiv. 24.

Τῦτο τὸ ποτήριον, ἡ καινὴ διαθήκη ἐν τῷ αματί με.

This Cup is the New Covenant in my Blood. Luk. xxii. 20. I Cor. xi. 25.

Compare these Phrafes with the like federal Phrases in the Old Teftament, as follows. Of Circumcifion it is faid, αυτη ἡ διαθήκη, This is the Covenant, which, &c.

And of the Blood of the Sacrifices, when the Law was received, it is faid ἰδὲ τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαOnxns. Behold the Blood of the Covenant, Exod. xxiv. 8.

The Phrases used by our Lord in the Inftitution of the Eucharift, are plainly parallel to thefe: And therefore the Eucharift is a federal Rite, as was Circumcifion or Sacrifice under the old Law. 2. ANO

2. ANOTHER Argument of the fame Thing may be drawn from the Eucharifl's fucceeding in the Room of the Paffover, or Pafchal Supper. Chrift is the Lamb of God, the true Pafchal Lamb, and therefore called our Paffover by St.Paul. † And he is represented in the Eucharist now, as by the Paffover before. The Rites of the Eucharift, and the Phrases used in the Inftitution, are mostly borrowed from the Pafchal Rites and Phrafes, as might be fhewn in many Particulars. But for Brevity fake, I chuse to refer to fuch Authors * as have specified them. Now, it is certain, that the Paffover was a federal Rite, in as much as Sacrifices are federal Rites. Befides that, the Scripture Account of the Paffover fhews it. It was a Sign and a || Memorial of God's redeeming his People from Egypt; and by that Redemption God covenanted with the People of the Jews to own them for his People, and to be their God.§ It is obvious to perceive how these Circumstances are applicable to the Chriftian Redemption, and to the Chriftian Eucharift, the Memorial of it.

3. I fhall only observe farther, that St. Paul in I Cor. x. manifeftly fuppofes, that in or by the Eucharift, there is the like Communion and Intercourse between God and every worthy Recei

ver, when Christians feaft at the Lord's Table, as there was between God and the Ifraelites, when the Ifraelites feafted at the Altar, and as there was between the Devils and their Votaries at the Table of Devils. And if Sacrifices in both Cafes were federal Rites, and amounted to cove→ nanting, then we have St. Paul's Authority for efteeming the Eucharift a federal Rite, a Seal of a Covenant between God and Man. And if it amount to covenanting, then we must admit of a reciprocal Intercourfe in it between God and Man, God fhedding forth his Grace and Bleffings, while Man makes his dutiful Returns of Obedience. And it is very observable, that as no Man was to eat of the Passover before he had been circumcifed,* fo the Rule alfo is, that no one must presume to partake of the Eucharift, before he has been baptized. And as there were strict and fevere Penalties injoined by the Law against profaning the Paffover, fo in the Apoftolical Age, it pleased God to inflict Diseases and Death upon such as profaned the Eucharift, † in order to create the greater Reverence and Veneration for this high and holy Solemnity.
