And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines. 12. 18. And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and had a name among the three. 19. SECTION X

David's War with the Philistines

And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David: and David heard of it, and went out against them down to the hold. Now the Philistines had come and made a raid and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. And three of the thirty chief went down to the rock, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines were encamped in the valley of Rephaim. And David was then in the hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem. And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate! And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the Lord, and said My God forbid it me, that I should do this: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men. And David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord said unto David, Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into thine hand. So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there; and David said, God hath broken mine enemies by my hand, like the breach of waters. Therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim. And they left their images there; and David gave commandment, and his men took them away and they were burned with fire. And the Philistines came up yet again, and made a raid and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. And when David inquired of the Lord, God said unto him, Thou shalt not go up after them: turn away from them, make a circuit behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. And it shall be, when thou hearest the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees that thou shalt bestir thyself and go out to battle for God is gone out before thee to smite the host of the Philistines. And David did as the Lord commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gezer. And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the fear of him upon all nations.

Exploits Against
Philistine Giants

And after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and took Gath, the bridle of the mother city, and her towns out of the hands of the Philistines. And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines: then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Sippai, of the sons of the giant, and they were subdued. And there was war again with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim the Beth-lehemite slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. And there was war again at Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born of the giant. And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei David's brother slew him. These four were born to the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants. II Sam. 21:15. And the Philistines had war again with Israel: and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. 16. And Ishbi-benob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being

And David perceived that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom on high, for his people Israel's sake. II Sam. 22:1. And David spake unto the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: 2. and he said,

The Lord is my rock and my fortress, and my deliverer, even mine.

3. The God of my rock, in him will I trust;

My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge;
My saviour, thou savest me from violence.

So shall I be saved from mine enemies.

The snares of death came upon me.

7. In my distress I called upon the Lord,
Yea, I called unto my God:

And he heard my voice out of his temple,
And my cry came into his ears.

8. Then the earth shook and trembled,

The foundations of heaven moved
And were shaken, because he was wroth.
9. There went up a smoke out of his nostrils,
And fire out of his mouth devoured:
Coals were kindled by it.

10. He bowed the heavens also and came down;
And thick darkness was under his feet.

II. And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly:

Yea, he was seen upon the wings of the wind.

12. And he made darkness pavilions round about him,
Gathering of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
13. At the brightness before him

Coals of fire were kindled.

14. The Lord thundered from heaven,

And the most high uttered his voice.

15. And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; Lightning, and discomfited them;

16. Then the channels of the sea appeared,

The foundations of the world were laid bare,

By the rebuke of the Lord,

At the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

17. He sent from on high, he took me; He drew me out of many waters;

18. He delivered me from my strong enemy,

From them that hated me; for they were too mighty for me.
