19. They came upon me in the day of my calamity:

But the Lord was my stay.

20. He brought me forth also into a large place:

He delivered me, because he delighted in me.

21. The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness:

According to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

22. For I have kept the ways of the Lord,

And have not wickedly departed from my God.

23. For all his judgments were before me:

And as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.

24. I was also perfect toward him,

And I kept myself from mine iniquity.

25. Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness; According to my cleanness in his eyesight.

26. With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful,

With the perfect man thou wilt shew thyself perfect;

27. With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure;

And with the perverse thou wilt shew thyself froward,

28. And the afflicted people thou wilt save:

But thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.

29. For thou art my lamp, O Lord:

And the Lord will lighten my darkness.

30. For by thee I run upon a troop:

By my God do I leap over a wall.

31. As for God, his way is perfect;

The word of the Lord is tried;

He is a shield unto all them that trust in him.

32. For who is God, save the Lord?

And who is a rock, save our God?

33. God is my strong fortress:

And he guideth the perfect in his way.

34. He maketh his feet like hind's feet: And setteth me upon my high places.

35. He teacheth my hands to war;

So that mine arms do bend a bow of brass.

36. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: And thy gentleness hath made me great.

37. Thou hast enlarged my steps under me,

And my feet have not slipped.

38. I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them;

Neither did I turn again till they were consumed.

39. And I have consumed them, and smitten them through, that they cannot arise: Yea, they are fallen under my feet.

40. For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle:

Thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.

41. Thou hast also made mine enemies turn their backs unto me,

That I might cut off them that hate me.

42. They looked, but there was none to save;

Even unto the Lord, but he answered them not.

43. Then did I beat them small as the dust of the earth,

I did stamp them as the mire of the streets, and did spread them abroad.

44. Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people;

Thou hast kept me to be the head of the nations:

A people whom I have not known shall serve me.

19. They came upon me in the day of my calamity: But the Lord was my stay.

20. He brought me forth also into a large place: He delivered me because he delighted in me.

37. I will pursue mine enemies, and overtake them; Neither will I turn again till they are consumed.

38. I will smite them through that they shall not be able to rise :

They shall fall under my feet.

39. For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: Thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against

43. Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people Thou hast made me the head of the nations: A people whom I have rot known shall serve me.

45. The strangers shall submit themselves unto me:

As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me.

46. The strangers shall fade away,

And shall come trembling out of their close places.

47. The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock;

And exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation:

48. Even the God that executeth vengeance for me,

And bringeth down peoples under me,

49. And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies:

Yea, thou liftest me up above them that rise up against me:

Thou deliverest me from the violent man.

50. Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the nations, And will sing praises unto thy name.

51. Great deliverance giveth he to his king:

And sheweth loving kindness to his anointed,
To David and to his seed, for evermore.

David's Kindness to Jonathan's Son

II Sam. 9: 1. And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake? 2. And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba, and they called him unto David; and the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he. 3. And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet. II Sam. 4: 4. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. II Sam. 9: 4. And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar. 5. Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar. 6. And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came unto David, and fell on his face, and did obeisance. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! 7. And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan's thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. 8. And he did obeisance, and said, What is thy servant; that thou should look upon such a dead dog as I am? 9. Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said unto him, All that pertained to Saul and to all his house have I given unto thy master's son. 10. And thou shalt till the land for him, thou, and thy sons, and thy servants; and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have bread to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. II. Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king commandeth his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king's sons. 12. And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants to Mephibosheth. 13. So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem; for he did eat continually at the king's table; and he was lame on both his feet.

THE HOUSE OF DAVID

I David

B. C. 1010 (Rev.)

SECTION XI

The Ark Removed from Kiriath-jearim

And David consulted with the captains of thousands and of hundreds, even with every leader. And David said unto all the assembly of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and if it be of the Lord our God, let us send abroad every where unto our brethren that are left in all the land of Israel, with whom the priests and Levites are in their cities that have suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us: and let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we sought not unto it in the days of Saul. And all the assembly said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. And David assembled all the chosen men of Israel together, from Sihor the brook of Egypt even unto the entering of Hamath, thirty thousand, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. And David arose, and went up, with all the people that were with him, to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, which is called by the Name, even the name of the Lord of hosts that sitteth upon the Cherubim. And they carried the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in the hill: and Uzzah and Ahio drave the new cart. And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was in the hill, with the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.

And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord God with all their might even with songs, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets. And when they came unto the threshing-floor of Nacon, Uzzah put forth his hand to take hold of the ark of God: for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error, because he put forth his hand to the ark: and there he died by the ark of God. And David was displeased, because the Lord had broken forth upon Uzzah: and he called that place Perez-uzzah, unto this day. And David was afraid of the Lord that day: and he said, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me? So David would not remove the ark of the Lord unto him into the city of David; but carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite. And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months: and the Lord blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had. And it was told king David, saying: The Lord hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. I Chron. 15: 1. And David made him houses in the city of
