say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. I love them that love me, 10 and I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. " But if a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him: 12 he shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. 13 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for

Chapter Thirtieth.

THE SINNER UNDECIDED.

The way of life and the way of death.

1"BEHOLD, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death. This is God's commandment, that we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. 4I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his judgments. But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish.

"See, I have set before you life and good, death and evil, a blessing and a curse. A blessing if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God; and a curse if ye will not obey, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day.-"Wherefore now let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the Lord our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts. 'Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and

opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.-Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire and devour, and there be none to quench; for he knows your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins. Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty. 10 If thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

11This commandment is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that thou shouldst say, 'Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?' 12 (that is, to bring Christ down from above :) or, 'Who shall descend into the deep?' (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead:) 13 neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldst say, 'Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?' But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. 14 For if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

15Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth and if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve: but as for me, I will serve the Lord. 16 And I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that you may live.

17 O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”

ILLUSTRATION. Elijah's sacrifice on mount Carmel. "Elijah came unto the people of Israel, and said, 'How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.' And the people answered him not a word. Then said Elijah unto them, 'I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men. Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God.' And all the people answered and said, 'It is well spoken.'

"And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, 'Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.' And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, 'O Baal, hear us.' But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

"And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, 'Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.—And it came to pass when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

"And Elijah said unto all the people, 'Come near unto me.' And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down; and with stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood, and said, 'Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.' And he said, 'Do it the second time.' And they did it the second time. And he said, 'Do it the third time.' And they did it the third time. And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

"And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, 'Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these
