THERE HERE are few who attend Divine Service, who have not at times wished for explanation in the Epistles and Gospels, and in the Psalms and Lessons, and to whom it would not have been acceptable to have been told when, by whom, and on what occasions they were written. To give some little assistance in these particulars, to bring more generally into notice the completion of some of the Prophecies in the Old Testament and in the New, and some of the other various means by which the truth of Christianity is illustrated and proved, to point out some of the classical beauties of the Scriptures, and to exhibit a plan by which knowledge of this kind may be brought into general circulation, are the main objects of the present Work. It is not offered to the Public as any thing like a perfect performance, nor as one that contains much, if any thing, that is not to be met with elsewhere; but to those who have not made Divinity their study, it may give (at least some little) assistance and information. The Notes will tend to produce a habit of searching out the meaning of obscure passages; the periodical recurrence to them on the days to which they belong, may cause them to be sifted and examined, so that mistakes in them may be rectified, and defects supplied; and what is wanting here, may in many instances be furnished by
