HISTORICAL CHRONICLE. 313 one fhould be loft in letting them know an event of fuch confequence. I dispatch this to Sir Benjamin Keeno, by way of Barcelona, and am making the beft of my way to Gibraltar, from which place I propofe fending their lordships a more particular account. P.S. I must defire you will acquaint their lordships, that I have appointed capt. Harvey to the command of the Defiance, in the room of capt. Andrews, flain in the action. I have juft fent the defects of the flips, as I have got it made out whilst I was clofing my letter. delays happened in the courfe of the voyage he loft feven days at Gibraltar, when the ut moft expedition was neceffary for the publick fervice; he was twelve days upon his paffage from Gibraltar to the diftance of 12 leagues A off Minorca, where the French fleet happened to find him; he called a council as to the prudence of venturing an engagement; the bad condition of the enemy's fleet occafioned them only maintaining a running fight; night, and the cautioufnefs of our admiral, put an entire end to the fkirmifh; after flaying four days, without feeing or feeking for the enemy, council was called to determine upon the expediency of relieving Fort St. Philip's-be errand they were fent out upon; when off Mahon har bour another council was ca le+, in which i was RESOLVED, that the endeavouring to throw in the defigned reinforcements was top dangerous, and that the preservation of the fort was impoffible. Another point determined was, that the non-appearance of the enemy's 37 C fleet made it probable they were failed against Gibraltar, and therefore, that it was prudent to get thither as faft as poffible: State of the English and French Fleets in the late G. Gen. 2 Chefd'Efcadre, La Clu, Chef Sabran, Mercier, Rochemaure, D'Herville, Beausfier, Coftebelle, The 18th the fquadron got in readiness to go and meet the English; but was prevented by a calm. The 19th in the morning we defcried E the English fquadron from the top-maftshead, and the two fquadrons drew pretty near each other that day, but never were within gun-fhot; which was not our fault, as the English were to windward of us. The 20th the French admiral worked about fo as to gain the wind; but juft as he had got into a favourable pofition for it, the wind fhirted in fuch a F manner as ftill left this advantage to the Enge 3 lib fquadron. At half an hour past two in the afternoon, the two fquadrons were in line of battle, and began the engagement. Engib confifted of 18 fail, of which 13 were of the line; and ours of 12 fhips of the line and 4 frigates. The action lafted above three hours and a half, but was not general all the time. The Enghfh fhips that fuffered moft G from our broadfides got to the windward again out of gun-fhot; they all along preserved this advantage, that they might keep clear of us as they pleafed. After having made their greatest efforts on our rear divifion, which they found fo clote, and from which they were fo furiously cannonaded, that they could not break in upon it, they refolved to sheer off, and did not appear again all the next day, be ing the 21ft. In general, none of their thips long flood the fire of ours. The ships of our fquadron futtered but little; they we e repair. cd in the pight, and ready to fight the next moruing." 5 19 10 4 Total 381181 Marquizan, That [The following obfervations on the conduct H of a fea-officer may be depended upon : tho' he follicited the command, he deferred failing from England till very preffing letters were lent him from authority; many frange Lig 314 Lift of Births, Deaths and Preferments Lift of Births for the Year 1756.
