Britain, in the completion of this fyftem, muft inevitably be exhausted; for with no better flock to engraft upon than the national troops of Hanover, the muft make up the difference between the electoral force and that of France in money; fo that tho' France fets out with an immenfe army, increases her internal force, as far as the pleases, and ftrengthens herself with the purchase of such auxiliaries as the can, yet we are to match foldier for foldier, and by mere dint of fubfidy produce an equal or better army.-The author confeffes his book to have been written before our treaty with Pruffia was known.

32. A 3d letter to the people of England, Is Scott. This pamphlet among other strange propofitions contains the following:-Englishmen are flaves becaufe every man is not permitted to carry a gun,-Difarming both Proteftants and Papifts is more alarming than difarming Proteftants, and allowing arms to Papifts. Our Ruffian and Heffian auxiliaries are mere to be dreaded now than popery was in the time of James II.-The act for preferving the game is a more alarming approach to arbitrary power, than king James's prefuming to difarm the Protestants by his own authority.-The revolution, tho' it banifhed popery, established arbitrary power.-It is a principle effential to whiggifm to establish arbitrary power and defpotic government.-An English whig minifter is ab abfolute potentaté,-Mere names to which No reasonable ideas were annexed, together with the ambition and avarice of the duke & dutchis of Marlborough were alone the causes of Q. Anne's war.-During that war our ruin went hand in hand with our victories.ALL the money fpent in the reign of K. Wm and Q. Anne was lavished to fupport Dutch and German interefts, and defroy our own.-The trade, agriculture, and manufactures of Britain have been, and are WHOLLY employed to fupport foreign interefts.-Our adherence to Germanic interests, and that alone has produced the reduction of intereft from 7 to 3 per cent, which has annihilated half the property of the kingdom, and in a word every Englishman is now in a state of more abject flavery than a purchaicd Negro.

N the 31st of October 1755, the weather clear and uncommonly warm for the feafon, the wind north, B about four o'clock in the afternoon, a fog appeared, which arofe from the fea, and coming up with the wind, covered the valley, (a thing which often happens in the fummer, but very rarely at this time of the year) C Soon after, the wind changing to the eaft, the fog returned to the fea, collected itself into a finall compafs, and became the thickeft I had ever feen; and as the fog returned the fea rofe with a prodigious roaring.

Nov. 1. The day broke with a ferene fky, the wind continuing eait; but at 9 o'clock the fun began to grow dim, and about half an hour after 9, we heard a rumbling like that of carriages, which increated fo much as to refemble the noife of the loudeft cannon; and immediately we felt the first fhock, which was fucceeded by a fecond, third and fourth, during which I faw E feveral fparks iffue from the fides of the mountains, refembling the kindling of a charcoal fire.

I continued on the fame fpot till the third fhock was over, and obferved the movement of the walls to be from east to west. I then retired to another fituation, from whence I could difco- F ver the sea coaft, and here I obferved, that from one of the hills, called Fojo, near the beach Adraga, iffued a great quantity of fmoak, very thick, but not very black, which ftill increafed with

,the fourth fhock, and continued in a greater or lefs degree. As we heard the fubterraneous rumbling, we expected an explofion from the Fajo, for the illuing of the fmoak was always proof the fubterraneous rumbling. This portioned to the greatnefs or fmallnefs finoke continued till noon of the 2d of November, when I retired from the place where I had obferved it. It continued for fome days more or lefs, according to the fubterraneous rumbling.

Returning to Colares fifteen days afterwards, I law no more fmoke, neither was there any fign of it when the rumbling fubterraneous noife was heard, and I found nobody to inform me what day the fmoaking ceafed.

The 20th of December, being in the aforementioned fituation, I faw a finall fog coming from the fea (from the fame quarter where the fmoke had iffued) which felt of fulphur, and the wind returning to the eait, the fog retired to the fea; and in the morning of the 21t, about 9 o'clock, we felt two fhocks of an earthquake of confiderable violence, but no more finoke was feen. I cannot fay whether the earthquake of the 11th was preceded by the fame phænomena and noife, becaule I was not at the place, nor had I any body there to make the obfervation.

I went to examine the place whence I faw the fmoke iffue, but did not difcover any aperture, nor did I find any fign of hre near the place. I inferr, therefore, either that this finoke exhaled from fome chafin or volcano that opened in the fea, which afterwards covered it; or that if the explotion was on land, the chafm clofed afterward. I think the firit, not only becaufe it is natural that the water might retire from the place where the eruption was, but likewife the fea having rifen infome places, it is probable it fell in others, and ftill it is there apparent, that it does not reach the ufual bounds, for, you walk almott dry to places where
