John ix. 36.

39.

He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might Jerusalem.” believe on him?

And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and
it is he that talketh with thee.

38. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this
world, that they which see not, might see; and that they
which see, might be made blind.

And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

But he that entereth in by the door, is the shepherd of the sheep:

To him the porter openeth, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out:

And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his. : voice.

And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him for they know not the voice of strangers.

This parable spake Jesus unto them; but they under-
stood not what things they were which he spake unto
them.

7. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, I am the door of the sheep:

All that ever came before me, are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not hear them.

I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved; and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy; I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down
my life, that I might take it again.

18. No man taketh it from me; but I lay it down of my-
self: I have power to lay it down, and I have power to
take it again. This commandment have I received of my
Father.

There was a division therefore again among the Jews, for these sayings.

And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad: why hear ye him?

Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil: can a devil open the eyes of the blind?

Christ publicly asserts his Divinity.

JOHN X. 22-38.

And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.

And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.
Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto
him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be
the Christ, tell us plainly.

Jesus answered them, I told you, and
the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear wit-
ye believed not:
ness of me.

But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep,
as I said unto you.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

And I give unto them eternal life: and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one.

31. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

32.

33.

Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works đơ ye stone me?

The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?

If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the Scripture cannot be broken;

In consequence of the opposition of the Jews, Christ retires
beyond Jordan.

Therefore they sought again to take him but he escaped out of their hand,

And went away again beyond Jordan, into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.

And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were

Christ, leaving the City, laments over Jerusalem.

LUKE Xiii. 23, to the end.

Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be Near Jerasaved? And he said unto them,

Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer, and say unto you, I know you not, whence ye are :

Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.

But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not, whence ye are; depart from me all ye workers of iniquity.

There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

These sections are referred to the same place by all the harmonizers, excepting that Archbishop Newcome has made various transpositions of some passages, and Doddridge places them all before the feast of dedication, and prior to his arranging John ix. 19; that he may not disturb the order of St. Luke.

The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.

And he said unto them, Go ye and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to-day and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

Nevertheless, I must walk to-day, and to-morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as an hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would

not!

Behold, your house is left unto you desolate and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

SECTION XXIV.

Christ dines with a Pharisee-Parable of the great Supper.
LUKE xiv. 1-24.

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one
of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath-day,
that they watched him.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

And Jesus answering spake unto the Lawyers and Pharisees saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go:

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have
an ass, or an ox, fallen into a pit, and will not straight-
way pull him out on the sabbath day?

6. And they could not answer him again to these things.
And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden,
when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms;
saying unto them,

8. When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not
down in the highest room, lest a more honourable man
than thou be bidden of him ;

9.

10.

And he that bade thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have

thee.

For whosoever exalteth himself, shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours ; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maim-
ed, the lame, the blind:

14. And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompence
thee for thou shalt be recompenced at the resurrection
of the just.

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many :

And sent his servant at supper-time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen,
and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused:

And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore
I cannot come.

So that servant came, and shewed his Lord these
things. Then the master of the house being angry,
said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and
lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the
maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

22. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast
commanded, and yet there is room.

23. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the
highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that
my house may be filled.

24. For I say unto you, That none of those men which
were bidden shall taste of my supper.
