trils, for wherein is he to be accounted of?

TO an attentive reader of the history of God's ancient people, few things are more observable, than their continual disposition to lean upon man rather than upon Jehovah; upon an arm of flesh, rather than upon the arm of the Almighty: not only did they multiply to themselves chariots and horses, and place their confidence in earthly means for victory in the battle; but they frequently sought alliances with

The prophets are perpetually complaining of Israel on this behalf. gaddest thou about so much to change thy way thou also shalt be ashamed of ? Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the Lord hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them."* In the chapter from which the text is taken, there is a similar complaint, coupled with a denunciation of vengeance for such faithless revolting. The day, thus announced, was the day of the Messiah, of the Lord Jesus Christ, who would appear, "in the fulness of time" for the destruction of a disobedient nation; and for the salvation of those, who would believe in Him and obey Him. "The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day."
